About Playbypoint

We're a rapidly expanding startup at the forefront of the racquet sports industry. At Playbypoint, we specialize in providing innovative enterprise software solutions that empower clubs, players, and coaches to streamline their operations and enhance their game. We're backed by top investors, trusted by leading clubs, and scaling fast – and we're looking for passionate individuals to join us in revolutionizing the racquet sports world with cutting-edge software.

The Role

We're looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Core Platform team — a group of 10+ engineers responsible for the foundation everything else runs on: infrastructure, reliability, developer experience, billing, payments, and data.

This is a people-first role with deep technical roots. You'll set the direction for foundational systems, remove friction for the broader engineering org, and build a team that other teams depend on. We're looking for someone who came up as a strong individual contributor and chose to grow into leadership — someone who still thinks in systems, still reads the code, and still holds a high technical bar.

What You'll Do
  • Lead, grow, and develop a team of 10+ engineers across infrastructure, Payments, Data, Developer Experience, and L3 engineering.

  • Own the technical roadmap for Core Platform — partnering with engineering leadership and product to prioritize what the foundation needs next.

  • Drive reliability and operational excellence: define SLOs, lead incident response culture, close the loop on postmortems.

  • Reduce friction for the engineering org — improve CI/CD, local development, observability tooling, and deployment practices.

  • Own billing and payments infrastructure in partnership with the Payments team — ensuring correctness, scalability, and compliance.

  • Hire, mentor, and retain senior engineers. Build a team that sets the technical standard for the organization.

  • Translate business constraints into platform capabilities — work across Finance, Product, and Engineering to ship foundational features that unlock product growth.

You Might Thrive in This Role If You
  • Have 8+ years of software engineering experience, with a meaningful portion in platform, infrastructure, or foundational systems — and 3+ years leading engineering teams.

  • Grew into management from a strong IC track — you've been a staff or senior engineer and you still think like one.

  • Have led teams of 8 or more engineers and know how to develop talent, handle performance, and build team culture in a distributed environment.

  • Are technically credible: you can review architecture, participate in design discussions, and push back on technical decisions with conviction.

  • Have experience owning reliability at scale — SLOs, on-call culture, incident management, and the postmortem discipline that actually changes behavior.

  • Understand the economics of platform work: how to make the case for foundational investment, and how to balance long-term health with short-term delivery pressure.

  • Communicate clearly and default to async. Strong written and spoken English is a must — we work closely with US-based stakeholders and partners.

Engineering in the AI Era

We expect every engineer at Playbypoint to work with AI as a core part of their craft — not as a novelty, but as a force multiplier across the entire SDLC. That means:

  • Actively using AI tools throughout the development lifecycle — design, coding, code review, testing, debugging, and incident analysis.

  • Having built AI-powered tooling or agents — whether internal automation, LLM-integrated features, or workflow improvements that shipped to production.

  • Knowing when AI adds real value and when it doesn't — judgment matters more than enthusiasm.

We don't expect everyone to be an AI researcher. We do expect you to be fluent in the tools and patterns of the moment, and curious about what's next.

Bonus
  • Background in payments, billing systems, or fintech — understanding money movement, reconciliation, or PSP integrations.

  • Experience scaling engineering orgs during rapid headcount growth.

  • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails at scale, or similar monolith-era systems evolving toward service decomposition.
