The Senior Director will define and communicate a bold strategic direction for the global TB portfolio while managing relationships with key funders and partners. They are responsible for leading a diverse team, overseeing programmatic impact, and ensuring the translation of evidence into scalable, government-led health solutions.
The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.
CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.
At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication, and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skill sets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org
CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.
CHAI’s Global TB Program Overview
Tuberculosis is the world’s deadliest infectious disease. Beyond 10 million people fall ill each year, and 1.2 million die, with a disproportionate burden in sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia. Roughly 40% of TB cases remain undiagnosed, fuelling ongoing transmission in communities. Children under five, people living with HIV, and those in underserved or displaced populations face the greatest risk.
CHAI partners with governments, multilateral organizations, and suppliers to close critical gaps across the TB care cascade. Our work spans three interconnected domains:
The program currently operates across 13 countries in Africa and Asia. CHAI’s Global TB Team provides strategic direction, technical leadership, and coordination across these country programs, while managing relationships with key funders and partners including the Global Fund, Gates Foundation, Unitaid, FCDO, GiveWell, Stop TB Partnership, and national TB programs.
Position Overview
New diagnostic tools, shorter treatment regimens, and growing political will are converging to create a real opportunity to reduce the toll of TB. At the same time, uncertain funding landscapes, fragmented health systems, and the sheer scale of the undiagnosed burden demand a leader who can operate with both strategic ambition and operational discipline.
We are looking for a Senior Director who will serve as CHAI's most senior voice on TB, both internally and externally. This person will set a clear programmatic vision, articulate it compellingly, and bring a wide range of audiences along country teams translating strategy into action, government leaders deciding how to allocate scarce resources, and funders weighing where to invest. That funder base includes long-standing partners such as the Gates Foundation and Unitaid, whose support remains central to the program, as well as a growing set of evidence-driven philanthropists who assess TB investments on cost-effectiveness and counterfactual impact. The Senior Director will need to sustain and deepen the first set of relationships while building the second, making the case for TB with rigour and in the terms each funder uses.
The TB landscape involves a rich ecosystem of multilateral organizations, bilateral donors, research institutions, civil society, and national programs, each with distinct mandates, priorities, and ways of working. Success in this role requires someone who can build trust and find common ground across that ecosystem, forging alignment where interests converge and navigating constructively where they diverge.
Reporting to the Vice President, HIV, Hepatitis and TB, the Senior Director will be responsible for shaping a portfolio that spans community-based prevention pilots, diagnostic technology introduction, market shaping interventions, and operational research across multiple countries. The Senior Director will lead a team that includes two Directors who serve as the program's scientific and technical leads, bringing deep expertise in TB diagnostics, treatment, prevention, and market shaping. The Senior Director's role is strategic ownership of the overall program direction, impact model, and funder relationships, working in close partnership with these Directors to ensure technical excellence and programmatic coherence across the portfolio.
The ideal candidate brings a rigorous, quantitative approach to deciding where resources do the most good and a track record of delivering sustainable public health impact in low- and middle-income countries. They will set a compelling strategic direction that galvanizes teams and partners and translates into measurable, large-scale impact in the countries where TB takes its greatest toll.

Analytical and Technical Leadership
External Representation and Ecosystem Influence
Team Leadership and People Development
Organizational Leadership and Cross-Cutting Collaboration
Preferred
Experience working at, with, or for evidence-focused or effective giving-aligned funders, or in roles where cost-effectiveness analysis drove resource allocation decisions.
Knowledge of tuberculosis, including TB epidemiology, diagnostics, therapeutics, and the global TB policy and financing architecture.
Prior experience working with or within national TB programs, the Stop TB Partnership, the Global Fund, Gates, or Unitaid.
Experience in market shaping, health commodity procurement, or access-to-medicines initiatives in a global health context.
Experience living and working in sub-Saharan Africa, South or Southeast Asia, or other high-TB-burden regions.
Advanced degree in economics, public policy, public health, management, science, or other relevant fields.
Why This Role
TB kills more people than any other infectious disease, yet it is both preventable and curable, and the tools to find, treat, and prevent it are inexpensive relative to the deaths they avert. Breakthroughs in diagnostics, shorter and more tolerable treatment regimens, and community-based delivery models have created real momentum. CHAI is at the centre of that momentum, with the relationships, operational reach, and market shaping expertise to turn promising innovations into population-level impact. The Senior Director will have the platform and the organizational backing to lead one of the most consequential programs in global health today.
