Job Description

CDM Smith is seeking a Senior Design Practice Technologist with a strong Bentley transportation design technology focus to join our Digital Engineering Solutions team. This individual will develop design practice initiatives to help advance transportation digital delivery and transformation by developing, governing, testing, and supporting Bentley-centered design standards, managed workspaces, ProjectWise environments, and model-based delivery workflows aligned with state Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. The role emphasizes hands-on expertise with OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, OpenBridge Modeler, OpenRail Designer, ProjectWise, Bentley Infrastructure Cloud, iModels, and Bentley managed workspace administration. Autodesk platforms may also be supported where business needs require, but Bentley transportation delivery, DOT workspace standards, and model-based design execution are central to this position. This role collaborates with project delivery teams, discipline experts, digital delivery leaders, and cross-functional technology partners to translate transportation delivery challenges into practical standards, workflows, training, QA/QC practices, and controlled rollout strategies that improve consistency, quality, and compliance across roadway, bridge, rail, and multidiscipline corridor projects. This includes translating strategic objectives into actionable insights that align with broader digital strategies and evolving DOT digital delivery requirements.

The ideal candidate will have a proven record in the field of design practice and supporting Bentley-based transportation design and DOT-compliant digital delivery, with a mindset of continuous learning, practical problem solving, and curiosity that leads to tangible improvements in workspace quality, plan production, model deliverables, and project execution.

Under the direction of the Design Practice Manager, the duties and responsibilities for this position include:

• Working on the cutting edge of Bentley transportation design tools and technologies, developing standards, processes, and workflows for OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, OpenBridge Modeler, OpenRail Designer, ProjectWise, Bentley Infrastructure Cloud, iModels, ConceptStation, and Bentley managed workspaces. Autodesk tools such as Civil 3D, Autodesk Forma, and Navisworks may be supported where they complement transportation digital delivery.
• Support the nationwide strategy and implementation of digital delivery processes for transportation projects, driving adoption of model-based workflows and digital twins across the United States.
• Collaborate with design teams, government agencies, subconsultants, and contractors to support Model as the Legal Deliverable initiatives, resolve technical challenges, and promote best practices in 3D modeling, quantity takeoff, and construction documentation.
• Developing and maintaining consistent, documented Bentley standards, processes, workflows, and best practices for model-based transportation design, DOT-compliant plan production, digital deliverables, data exchange, and QA/QC practices in alignment with the broader digital enablement strategy.
• Serve as a Bentley transportation design technology lead, supporting the development, governance, testing, deployment, and troubleshooting of managed workspaces aligned with state Department of Transportation standards, ProjectWise environments, and digital delivery requirements.
• Developing and maintaining Bentley managed workspaces, including configuration standards, resource files, seed files, feature definitions, civil cells, templates, annotation groups, levels, and related workspace components used to support DOT-compliant transportation design and plan production.
• Testing state DOT workspace updates, software-version changes, resource updates, and configuration revisions before deployment to reduce project disruption and support controlled rollout of workspace changes.
• Supporting version control, documentation, communication, and governance for workspace updates, including change tracking, release coordination, validation steps, and escalation of configuration risks or defects.
• Ability to communicate technical workspace, digital delivery, and model-based design concepts in an accessible and easy-to-understand manner for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Develop and deliver training materials, guidance, and communication strategies to support the effective use of Bentley transportation workflows for 3D roadway, bridge, rail, and corridor modeling; model-generated plans, profiles, cross sections, quantities; ProjectWise and Bentley Infrastructure Cloud workflows; and DOT-specific digital delivery practices.
• Oversee testing and validation of transportation design practice processes and workflows, including DOT workspace standards, plan production requirements, model deliverable expectations, model quality, interoperability, model-based reviews, and model-derived deliverables to ensure completeness, accuracy, consistency, and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
• Serve as a technical expert for Bentley transportation authoring platforms, state DOT workspaces, ProjectWise environments, common data environments, model federation, and digital delivery requirements, including configuration, testing, troubleshooting, user support, Helpdesk training, and mentoring for managed workspaces, workspace standards, and agency-specific design environments.
• Eagerness to learn and work as part of a multidisciplinary team across a global transportation practice, coordinating roadway, bridge, rail, drainage, utilities, geospatial, and other corridor disciplines as applicable.
• Display excellent interpersonal skills to build quality relationships with the team and across the organization.
• Assist on initiatives and efforts that advance transportation digital delivery, DOT-compliant model-based design, Bentley workspace governance, and repeatable project delivery practices as part of a collaborative team.
• Assist with the development of documentation, standards, best practices, and workflows for Bentley transportation design technology, including ProjectWise, Bentley Infrastructure Cloud, iModels, managed workspaces, model coordination, visualization, review, and information management workflows. Support Autodesk Forma, Navisworks, and other platforms where they integrate with transportation delivery needs.
• Benchmark best practices across state DOTs to understand how different agencies structure Bentley workspaces, configuration sets, model-based design requirements, ProjectWise environments, naming conventions, file structures, metadata, plan production standards, and deliverable requirements.
• Present to both internal and external audiences as needed.
• Assist the business with marketing, communications, and business development descriptions from a transportation technology perspective, including clear descriptions of Bentley-based model design, state DOT digital delivery capabilities, ProjectWise-supported collaboration, and digital deliverable practices, as needed.
• Assist with internal and external website descriptions as needed.
• Perform other duties as required.

Skills & Abilities

• Expert knowledge and proven ability in Bentley transportation design technologies and processes, including OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, OpenBridge Modeler, OpenRail Designer, ProjectWise, Bentley Infrastructure Cloud, iModels, managed workspaces, model-based design, digital delivery, and state DOT-compliant production workflows. Autodesk experience is beneficial. Inquisitive, with a desire to ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of business issues. Passionate about helping transportation business lines drive success through practical design technology, workspace governance, and digital delivery processes.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate workspace, configuration, ProjectWise, digital delivery, and DOT compliance concepts clearly to people from both technical and non-technical backgrounds. Ability to listen, build rapport, and establish credibility as a strategic and diplomatic partner with business units, delivery teams, and technology stakeholders.
• Innovative and able to apply critical thinking skills to generate solutions that improve Bentley workspace reliability, DOT-compliant plan production, model-based design consistency, automation, repeatable data-driven workflows, interoperability, and digital quality assurance for transportation design.
• Detail oriented with the ability to assist with highly complex or specialized transportation projects involving multidisciplinary models, state DOT workspaces, configuration standards, software-version requirements, ProjectWise and other common data environments, controlled workspace rollouts, and model-based contractual deliverables.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.
• 6 years of related experience.

Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Preferred Qualifications

• Experience implementing, administering, validating, or supporting state DOT Bentley managed workspaces for OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, OpenBridge Modeler, OpenRail Designer, and related transportation design workflows.
• Experience supporting Bentley OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation workflows within state DOT-managed workspace environments, including configuration troubleshooting, workspace validation, standards deployment, and coordination with agency-specific digital delivery requirements.
• ProjectWise administration or workspace integration experience, including support for Bentley Infrastructure Cloud, iModels, managed workspace distribution, agency configurations, access controls, controlled software and resource updates, and coordination between project delivery environments and workspace standards.
• Familiarity with multiple state DOT digital delivery standards, DOT workspace standards, plan production requirements, model deliverable expectations, model-based quality reviews, data exchange, model-derived quantities, naming conventions, file structures, metadata, and deliverable standards.
• Experience preparing, validating, and delivering transportation models and design files as contractual deliverables, including defining model authority and reliance requirements, documenting model content and limitations, coordinating model review and acceptance criteria, and meeting applicable state DOT digital delivery standards.
• Understanding of interoperability, scripting, low-code/no-code automation, or related computational design approaches that improve Bentley transportation design quality, DOT-compliant consistency, workspace validation, and delivery efficiency.
• Experience troubleshooting OpenRoads Designer workspace and configuration issues, including civil standards, feature definitions, templates, annotation groups, levels, seed files, resource files, and related Bentley configuration components.
• Understanding of DOT plan, model, and data deliverable requirements, including how requirements differ across agencies and how those requirements influence workspace structure, ProjectWise environments, naming conventions, metadata, and file organization.
• Experience with Civil 3D, including corridor modeling, grading, pipe networks, and model-based plan production for transportation infrastructure projects, is helpful where Autodesk workflows complement Bentley-centered transportation delivery.

Additional Pay Range Information

CDM Smith is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. This pay range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. In addition to geographic location, a candidate’s salary is determined by several other factors including, but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, and education/training.
Additional Compensation

All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
