The Senior Database Administrator will lead database management efforts, including performance tuning, disaster recovery, and cloud-based system optimization. They are also responsible for mentoring team members, overseeing database projects, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure scalability and security.
What you will be doing:
As a Senior DBA, you will take on a leadership role within the database team. In addition to managing and optimizing databases, you will mentor team members, oversee database projects, and make technical recommendations to improve performance and scalability. You will also have a more strategic role in planning and executing database initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead database management efforts, ensuring best practices for both on-premises and cloud-based systems.
Design and implement disaster recovery, failover, and backup strategies, ensuring minimal downtime and data availability.
Perform advanced database performance tuning, including resource optimization and identifying long-term improvements.
Lead and mentor DBAs, offering guidance on technical issues and helping to develop their skills.
Plan and execute database upgrades, patches, and vulnerability management in both traditional and cloud environments.
Develop and maintain SQL procedures, views, and scripts to support production and reporting systems.
Collaborate with system administrators and other teams to perform capacity planning and manage database scalability.
Provide leadership in troubleshooting complex database issues and drive incident resolution.
Participate in cross-team strategic planning and product development meetings, offering technical expertise on database solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibility #1– 30%
Database Administration
• Utilize knowledge of database design to work closely with architects in database creation and on-going maintenance tasks
• Utilize knowledge of database features and upcoming releases to drive database technology decisions and mentor other DBAs
• Write and troubleshoot advanced SQL and PL/SQL
• Expert knowledge navigating UNIX/LINUX systems as well as shell scripting
• Able to identify and write the requirements for any scripting projects needed
• Able to troubleshoot very complex issues using both experience and a proven series of steps
• Assist all members of the DBA team with troubleshooting issues
• Able to identify issues ahead of time through monitoring and research to prevent escalations or member impact
• Proven ability to script complex DBA tasks to allow for scalability and support
• Provide direction on areas / products to investigate; weigh pros / cons to recommend the go-forward path
• Actively seeks technical debt to reduce; add debt reduction to team's workload
• Digest the vulnerabilities report, and schedule necessary upgrades and patches to mitigate
• Able to accurately estimate current work, and work that is on the backlog or roadmap that has little-to-no design details
Requires little to no oversight on prioritization needs - uses discretion well to prioritize work
Responsibility #2 – 20%
Methodology / Standards
• Retain audit compliance while supporting development teams. Design and develop standards and the solutions to support them.
• Implement best practice techniques for performance and mitigate risk. Work with development teams to meet this goal.
• Understand basic Change Management principals, able to create standard changes when applicable prevents unauthorized changes. Work with team on possible standard changes for DB maintenance tasks.
• Understand concepts of capital investment, product life and depreciation. Align this to technical decisions they suggest for projects.
• Business acumen as related to the product(s) responsible
• Know the value Premier provides its customers at a corporate level and how the products are used in a business context.
• Understand concept of product lifecycle management and an understanding of where products are in their lifecycle
• Aware of issues affecting product's health. Work and advocate for these issues to be addressed.
• Include best practices and standards and provide guidance to Associates and Engineers on adjustments necessary for adherence to those same standards
Able to track work activities across multiple Associates or Engineers and understand how that work comes together
Responsibility #3 – 30%
Team Involvement
• Clear verbal, visual and written communication
• Responsible for communication to stakeholders, senior leadership or other departments on a routine basis
• Able to shift between technical and lay-speak with ease, depending on audience
• Expertly able to handle department-wide presentation or representing Premier in front of customers
• Communication evidences a complete understanding of big-picture context
• Meetings expand beyond project work, or span across teams / departments. Provide agenda and context. Delegate work when necessary and model active listening and participation.
• Lead team meetings like standups, planning and requirement discussions and frequently performs these functions when management delegates this responsibility
• Comfortable presenting to Sr. Leadership
• Work with Engineers and Architects to convey a thought and how its rationale relates to a strategic technical concept and how tactical work connects to that strategy
• Influence outside sphere of project team to include stakeholders or peers on other teams
• Status reports contain suggestions or options to mitigate risks and demonstrate an awareness of longer-term project implications
• Collaborate with Engineers and Architects to share ideas and design systems
Requires little oversight
Responsibility #4 – 20%
Mentorship
• Drive change within the team
• Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to less senior teammates
• Delegate to less senior team members
• Will drive results of those to whom delegating
• Takes initiative to determine team tasks and assign tasks to less senior team members
• Actively participate in solution design and other discussions with the team and consistently able to implement the agreed-upon development approach
• Actively build professional cross functional relations
• Self-motivated to learn about and stay current with new and emerging technologies and capabilities and bring applicable technologies to team’s best practices
Develop skills to drive conflict resolutions with professionalism within the team

Skills:
Complex restore scenarios
Expertise in managing RDBMS and cloud databases.
Extensive experience with database performance tuning, disaster recovery, and failover techniques.
Proven leadership in managing and mentoring teams, as well as leading database projects.
Strong experience with SQL, database automation, and scripting for database administration tasks.
Knowledge of cloud infrastructure and services, particularly within the Azure ecosystem.
Strong communication skills and ability to provide technical leadership and guidance to others.
Experience:
• Knowledge of infrastructure design; ability to follow methods and standards as set by the team; understand Change Management principals
• Demonstrated understanding of UNIX/LINUX systems, shell scripting, Automation, executing tasks, agile development, product management and bug tracking tools
• Ability to execute necessary upgrades and patches; Good listener, team player; project management skills; work with agile development teams; understand concept of relative estimation; self-starter
