 Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide seeks a Research Scientist to join BCI with a focus on bats and wind energy. BCI is a distributed organization with staff across the world and incorporated in Austin, TX. BCI is a global leader on finding solutions that support renewable wind energy development while reducing its impact on bat populations. Over the past two decades, BCI’s wind energy program has designed and executed ground-breaking evidence-based scientific work that leads to meaningful outcomes.

Position Description:

The Research Scientist will report to the Director of Bats and Wind Energy, supporting high-priority research projects and evidence-based conservation. This is a highly quantitative position focused on analyzing ecological data to advance bat conservation and renewable energy solutions. Initial responsibilities will focus on delivering priority wind energy research projects and quantitative analyses related to bat fatalities and acoustics at wind energy facilities.

This is a full-time position with an initial one-year appointment, with the potential for extension based on funding availability and organizational needs. As organizational priorities and project needs evolve, responsibilities may expand or shift to support additional research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

The Quantitative Ecologist will:

  • Manage, process, and curate data
  • Analyze data to contribute to scientific publications that inform bat conservation
  • Ensure all research and products are reproducible, repeatable, and rigorous
  • Collaborate effectively with BCI’s staff and external partners
  • Consult and contribute to evidence-backed conservation efforts
  • Participate in the dissemination results of research in presentations, reports, and peer-reviewed publications

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Experience

We are seeking candidates with strong, demonstrable, quantitative analysis experience.

  • Graduate degree (MSc) and at least 2 years experience in a relevant field such as biology, ecology, wildlife, conservation, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data management
  • Proficiency in quantitative analyses, including use of advanced statistics and statistical computing in reproducible and open science tool.
  • Proficiency with analysis in Program R
  • Proficiency in data visualization
  • Proficiency and interest in scientific writing
  • Demonstrated interest in hypothesis-driven research and applied conservation
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and accurately with attention to detail and prioritize under the pressure of deadlines
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of staff, government agencies, industry, landowners, and other partners
  • Comfort and ability to work and communicate effectively in a remote work environment
  • Valid US driver’s License


Preferred Knowledge/Experience

  • Familiarity with bat ecology and wind energy issues
  • Ph.D. or other advance training
  • Experience with bat fatality estimates from wind energy facilities
  • Experience in acoustic monitoring and acoustic data processing
  • Working knowledge of bat acoustic technology hardware and software

Compensation and Benefits

  • $70,000-$75,000 annually (depending on experience), full-time salaried. Paid biweekly electronically or via check.
