Relationship Consultant – Agency Channel Addendum

This addendum supplements the base Relationship Consultant job profile and clarifies how the role is applied within the Pet Agency Channel. It focuses on intermediary-based distribution models, including independent agencies and networks, while allowing flexibility to support adjacent partner types (e.g., financial advisors and other referral-driven relationships) aligned to the channel strategy.

Agency Channel Role Summary

Within the Agency Channel, the Relationship Consultant serves as the relationship lead for intermediary partners, with a primary focus on partner activation, enablement, and distribution growth across an established referral-based model.

The role helps partners effectively adopt and promote Nationwide Pet by simplifying access, strengthening engagement, and aligning partner capabilities with channel growth opportunities. Success requires balancing relationship management with data-driven activation strategies and coordinated cross-functional execution.

Agency Channel Focus Areas

1. Intermediary Partner Activation

Drives adoption and activation of assigned partners by leveraging program resources, including digital referral tools (e.g., unique URLs, landing pages), onboarding programs, campaigns, and marketing enablement assets.

2. Distribution Growth Through Engagement Models

Identifies and prioritizes opportunities to increase referral activity, quote generation, and production within intermediary relationships using performance insights, engagement data, and partner segmentation.

3. Partner Enablement & Experience

Equips partners to confidently promote and integrate Nationwide Pet into their client conversations and workflows through targeted education, coaching, and simplified processes tailored to their business model.

4. Channel Segmentation & Model Flexibility

Supports a range of intermediary types—including independent agencies, networks, advisors, and alternative partners—by adapting onboarding, communication, and activation strategies based on partner sophistication, scale, and role in the distribution ecosystem.

5. Cross-Functional Enablement

Coordinates with internal partners (Marketing, Sales Support, Operations, Digital, and Service teams) to deliver integrated solutions that improve partner experience and reduce friction in the distribution process.

The Agency Channel includes multiple intermediary structures and referral-based models. Success in this environment requires:

  • Tailored engagement strategies by partner type and readiness

As a Relationship Consultant, you'll work with internal and external clients or business partners to develop new business and strengthen existing business relationships. You will identify, prioritize and deliver workflow, service and business solutions. You'll have opportunities to be a liaison between a business unit and its clients/partners to promote our people and services and to facilitate issue resolution.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops and manages relationships with internal/external clients and business partners. Identifies business needs, service requirements, key issues, alternative solutions and resources for the clients and business.

  • Evaluates strategies and objectives of the business partners and recommends proper services and products. Resolves issues. Develops and implements strategic plans, coordinates reports, communicates performance results and develops action plans.

  • Monitors overall client satisfaction, progress of all ongoing work and projects and process improvement in order to improve service delivery.

  • Promotes and supports the sales and production of products through highly interactive relationships. Assists in new product development and field introduction.

  • Markets, promotes and educates customers on products and services. Coordinates benchmarking efforts for business unit. Captures information for selling the business unit services and makes presentations to clients.

  • Owns the administration and communication of service level agreements or contract commitments with assigned client base.

  • Develops and implements plans to tackle business problems related to the client's business and the services/products provided.

  • Assists in defining the communication channel and facilitates communication and integration of services between business unit and client. May serve as point of contact for the client.

  • May conduct training on procedures, processes and services provided by business unit.

  • Initiates the development and implementation of internal standards consistent with long-range departmental objectives and acceptable corporate standards.

  • Leads and participates in special projects and task teams.

 May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Director or Officer.

Typical Skills and Experiences:


Education: Undergraduate studies in a related field. Certification, licensing and functionally specific course work as required by the business unit desired.

Experience: Five years of related experience including, but not limited to, customer service, relationship management, project management and relevant line management experience in an insurance or financial services environment.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of marketing techniques and approaches, organizational change, facilitation and negotiation and project management. Strong interpersonal, communication and facilitation skills. Proven working knowledge of products, services and processes of the related business unit. Ability to develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with business unit and client. Must be able to lead multiple tasks and projects. Must have the ability to evaluate and recommend problem resolutions.

Job Conditions:


Overtime Eligibility: Exempt (Not eligible)

Working Conditions: Normal office conditions. Occasional travel. Non-standard or extended work may be required based on project needs.
