JOB PURPOSE or JOB SUMMARY:

The Programs Manager Position is a mission delivery position that oversees all the programmatic efforts within an assigned geographic area. The position typically reports to an Executive Director or Area Director, is part of the Chapter Operations Team, and works closely with National Teams that focus on research, education, programs, and impact measurement. The Programs Manager is responsible for implementation of AFSP approved programs within assigned markets. The position is also responsible for recruiting and training volunteers to build AFSP’s capacity to deliver our mission.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:


Programs Manager Principal Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Increase program delivery based on agreed upon goals determined by supervisor.
  2. Strengthen volunteer base and maximize program impact within chapter(s) service area. 
  3. Implement AFSP’s strategic direction by meeting goals outlined in National Strategic Plan. 
  4. Travel regularly within assigned service area and to annual Chapter Staff Meeting.
  5. Evening and weekend hours required for programmatic trainings/presentations and meetings with volunteers.
  6. Drive Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts to ensure our mission is delivered to diverse communities.
  7. Measure impact by consistently tracking programs delivered and individuals reached.

 

Mission Delivery through Programs:

  1. Plan, manage, and implement AFSP’s prevention, education, loss and healing, and research connection programs as well as other programmatic activities in person and virtually.
  2. Work with supervisor to ensure significant growth in number of individuals reached through AFSP’s approved programs.
  3. Expand outreach efforts to effectively engage diverse communities disproportionately impacted by suicide.
  4. Ensure all programmatic activity is tracked in Program Tracker and up to date.
  5. Communicate impact of AFSP work to community leaders and local constituents, and organizations.
  6. Respond to program inquiries and direct requests for presentations/trainings.
  7. Actively look for opportunities to provide resources to survivors and individuals with lived experience.
  8. Provide programmatic content for sponsorship and grant applications.
  9. Ensure program information is available at all chapter activities.
  10. Support chapter advocacy efforts.
  11. Develop budgets for all programmatic activities.
  12. Work with event related vendors, municipalities, and venues for program related presentations and trainings.

Volunteer Management:

  1. Responsible for recruiting, training, and managing volunteers to deliver programs throughout the chapter territory.
  2. Under direction of supervisor, staff the chapter programs and education committee.
  3. Keep abreast of all current AFSP National program initiatives and activities and communicate strategic direction to program volunteers.
  4. Ensure volunteers track all programmatic activities in Program Tracker.
  5. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • This is a 3-year grant-funded position focused on youth mental health across North Carolina.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Bachelor’s Degree

Experience and/or Training

  • Minimum 2 years experience in community outreach, program coordination, volunteer coordination, and non-profit work.
  • 1-2 years experience recruiting and training volunteers.
  • Experience working directly with diverse populations and community partners.

Technology/Equipment Must possess technology literacy skills and ability to utilize and learn multiple platforms to work remotely and present virtually.


 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and/or Training Experience working with national organizations with chapter or affiliate system.

Technology/Equipment Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Virtuous.

Bilingual or multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Candidate must be diplomatic and have the ability to communicate tactfully.
  • Strong public speaking skills with ability to present in front of large and small groups virtually and in person.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and trainings.
  • Ability to work a full-time schedule and have regular attendance at the workplace. This position is remote.
  • Ability to travel as needed to attend presentations, trainings, meetings or events.
  • Ability to work after regular business hours and on weekends when necessary. 
  • All other work-related duties as assigned.

 

 

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Must have the ability to work on multiple projects at once and handle pressure to perform at high level. 
  • Must be able to handle conflict and have strong problem-solving skills. 
  • Must have the mental stamina to be in contact with people who are grieving or who are in crisis.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and/or hear, and/or use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand, and/or walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds while moving files or small packages. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The mental and physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
  • This role requires you to have a driver’s license and/or the ability to drive across your state(s) to which the role is a steward; must be able to rent vehicle on behalf of AFSP as needed.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Remote position with travel required for delivering programs/presentations, trainings, attending meetings, conferences, and events. 
  • Fast paced and dynamic work environment. 
  • Interaction with several constituents – staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and the general public. 
  • Requires speaking in front of both small and large groups. 
  • In person and virtual communication. 
  • Travel is required. Must reside in service territory.
