Responsibilities


This optical communications internship is ideal for students in electrical engineering, photonics, or information technology who want hands‑on experience with coherent optical systems, high‑speed data transmission, and advanced test and measurement solutions used in data centers and next‑generation networks.

 

You will have the following responsibilities:

  • Support measurement science activities for high‑speed and coherent optical communication systems
  • Work hands‑on in the laboratory, performing optical communication experiments and measurements
  • Operate and optimize optical test and measurement equipment and devices
  • Develop test automation scripts and workflows using MATLAB and Python
  • Collect, process, and perform initial data analysis of experimental results
  • Optimize test setups and perform measurement and analysis optimization
  • Document results in application notes and present technical findings

 


Qualifications


 

Must Have

 

  • Enrolled in or admitted to a Master’s program in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Information Engineering, or a related field
  • Fundamentals of optical communications, including high‑speed or coherent optical systems
  • Hands‑on laboratory experience through lab courses or projects
  • Practical experience with fiber‑optic handling, including fiber facets and making fiber connections
  • Basic programming skills for test automation and data analysis (MATLAB, Python)
  • Strong analytical mindset and willingness to learn
  • Good English communication skills

Nice to Have

  • Experience with optical communication test equipment and instrumentation
  • Exposure to test automation, measurement optimization, or experimental analysis
  • Interest in standardization activities and technical documentation
  • German language skills (beneficial but not required)
