We're looking for someone who can help make internal systems hum, working with other members of the staff team. This position encompasses a mix of operations work involving a range of tools and project management. Excellence in this position means carrying out a range of simple and complex tasks that are repeated weekly, monthly, and yearly, collaborating effectively with team members, and implementing improvements.

This job is for you if...You have excellent attention to detail and deadlines, excellent proofing and copyediting skills, are a quick learner, and thrive while juggling a variety of projects; you’re excited about building people-power movements for justice; you love helping things run smoothly and efficiently and being of service...You're excited about learning and diving into new tools and find it easy to get the hang of them. You are motivated to make the team's work hum so that training participants and groups SMT supports have a great experience!

Social Movement Technologies’ mission is to provide organizing strategy, training and campaign support to build people-power for justice in the digital age. We're a nonprofit movement support group, driven 100% to meet the needs of social change groups. We're super lean - we do lots with little, just like most of the groups we work with. Increasingly, SMT is training and working with groups working on racial and climate justice that need support to ramp up online. SMT’s small but highly effective team has trained staff from over 6,800 groups and unions in its first 13 years, and worked with more than 240 groups on in-depth campaigns.

Compensation and Hours. This is a 20 hours/week position at this time. (U.S.-based salary range is $32K - $36K). Pay varies based on experience and the cost of living where the person is based. Check out the country rate sheet if based outside the U.S.. SMT's culture is hard-driving and highly collaborative. We're looking for people who are passionate about building justice in the world - and who feel privileged to do this work as more of a life calling than a job. SMT is a terrific place for extensive access to skill-building and professional development.

Additional benefits include a monthly contribution towards health care, an employer match to 401K plan contributions, 3+ weeks of vacation, and federal holidays. We offer support for remote work, training and mentoring, and a highly collaborative, supportive work environment.

Note that we have also posted for a half-time Technology & Product Lead. If you believe you are proficient in both skill areas and want SMT to consider you for both for a full-time combined position, please indicate so and provide relevant information on expertise. Our experience though is that these are quite different skill sets.

Here are some examples of what you might help with or lead on:

  • Manage SMT's emailing calendar, loading emails in emailing tool (Action Network) and ensuring that emails go out error-free
  • Work with a translation team to translate content for emails
  • Run payroll, payments, billing, and invoicing for the team
  • Respond to questions, inquiries, and quick response requests - both within the team and externally with trainees and others
  • Post social media content provided to you
  • Manage team tasks in our project management tool (ClickUp), and help the team stay on track
  • Collect periodic metrics to gage results in our work

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Excellent team communication skills
  • Able to multitask and juggle multiple projects and communicate reliably about them
  • Important: skilled with WordPress, Google Suite, social media posting, project management (either ClickUp or Asana), loading emails and segmenting for email sends in at least one CRM (we use Action Network; MailChimp is not a CRM), Slack best practices
  • High attention to detail is a must. Excellent proofing and copyediting skills are required.
  • Committed and experienced with movement work
  • Experience working with or in Black/brown-led groups
  • Friendly and encouraging, and able to convey this via email, videoconferencing, and phone
  • Super motivated to learn more and stay abreast of new tech developments
  • Able to schedule yourself reliably and be attentive to deadlines
  • Interested in this for more than a year or two. This is not a short-term in-between kind of position.
  • Experienced in project management, understanding how to manage a team and break down deadlines etc.

Movement operations experience is important, as is the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment.

How to apply: Use of A.I. to draft responses is detectable and leads to applications that aren't useful and are more likely to be declined. You may be asked to demonstrate proficiency via screen share. An online exercise will be required. If you have other work you'd like to share, include a link to a folder or other documents at the bottom of your cover letter since this app limits uploads. References will be requested at a later point. Position will be open until filled.

We regret that we will not be able to acknowledge all applications personally, nor do we have the capacity to discuss them with applicants before they apply. We greatly appreciate the time and care you are investing in this process! ♥️💚💜
