WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
The Medical Director serves as the senior physician advisor for American Red Cross Training Services, providing physician-level clinical governance, external credibility, and regulatory support across hospital, EMS, Workplace and Aquatic domains. The Medical Director partners with the Vice President, Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) to ensure that all clinical programs, content, and educational practices reflect evidence-based science, meet regulatory expectations, and maintain alignment with national and international scientific standards.
The Medical Director provides evidence-based clinical guidance in support of organizational strategy, serves as the primary physician liaison to the Scientific Advisory Council (SAC), and supports the Red Cross in engaging hospitals, health systems, EMS agencies, workplace, aquatic and regulatory bodies. The role is structured as a part-time (0.2-0.25 FTE) physician advisor position, with the potential to scale as organizational needs evolve.
The Medical Director retains autonomous clinical judgment and peer review authority, while reporting administratively to the CCO/VP for operational and strategic clinical matters.
The work location for this exciting opportunity is virtual. The selected candidate will work 100% remotely from home and can be located anywhere in the United States .

Clinical Governance and Evidence-Based Practice
Provide evidence-based clinical guidance in support of organizational strategy and program development.
Advise the Vice President, Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) and senior leadership on clinical standards, protocols, and emerging science.
Ensure clinical content and programs reflect current ILCOR science, Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) recommendations, and national best practices.
Physician Leadership and Peer Review
Provide peer review and credentialing oversight for clinical content, instructional design, and program materials.
Support quality improvement and regulatory compliance activities across all Training Services programs.
Serve as a physician-level clinical reviewer for high-acuity content areas including BLS, ALS, PALS, NALS, and prehospital education.
Scientific Advisory Council Liaison
Serve as the primary physician liaison to the Scientific Advisory Council (SAC).
Support SAC sub-councils in the development, review, and dissemination of clinical recommendations.
Coordinate with the CCO/VP to translate SAC guidance into actionable program updates.
Hospital, EMS, and External Engagement
Provide clinical validation and credibility in hospital, EMS, and prehospital environments.
Support engagement with hospitals, health systems, EMS agencies, and regulatory bodies during contract development, program review, and partnership discussions.
Represent the organization, in coordination with the CCO/VP, in relevant clinical, scientific, and regulatory forums.
Regulatory and Compliance Support
Provide signature authority on clinical documentation as required by state law and regulatory bodies.
Support accreditation, certification, and continuing education compliance activities.
Advise on standards, protocols, and regulatory alignment for Training Services programs.
Strategic Collaboration
Partner with the CCO/VP, Clinical Directors, and Senior Director of Science and Education to align physician leadership with enterprise clinical strategy.
Support business unit strategy through clinical advisement on new product development, market expansion, and program enhancement.
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:
Education: MD, DO or PhD in Biomedical Science or related field required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience. MD or DO preferred. Current, active, unrestricted U.S. medical license required.
Experience: Minimum 8 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
Preferred Certifications and Experience:
Active or prior EMS Medical Director experience preferred.
Experience with resuscitation science, ILCOR-aligned guideline development, or AHA/ARC program leadership strongly preferred.
Fellowship training in EMS, Critical Care, or Resuscitation preferred.
Board Certification in EMS medicine preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
Strong command of evidence-based medicine, clinical governance, and healthcare regulatory environments.
Demonstrated ability to translate clinical science into operational programs and educational content.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage executive leadership, scientific bodies, and external partners.
Strong collaboration skills with multidisciplinary clinical and operational teams.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and applicable enterprise software systems.
Travel:
Ability to travel 10-20%.
Status:
Part-time position (0.2-0.25 FTE) with potential to scale based on organizational needs.

Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. **We will review specific salary information at the time of phone screening based upon your location & experience.**
