Description of Work

The Math Instructional Coach will support the implementation of a new mathematics curriculum (Open Up Resources) in ten low-performing schools as part of the Golden LEAF Schools Initiative. An expert in mathematics instruction, curriculum implementation, and formative assessment, the Math Instructional Coach works alongside school leaders, instructional staff, and teachers to promote consistent, high-quality math instruction. This role involves designing professional development to support curriculum implementation, providing hands-on, job-embedded coaching, collaborating with the Golden LEAF Schools Leadership and Assessment coach as well as external partners to design a coherent and effective coaching and support system for participating schools, and supporting teachers to address instructional challenges and improve student outcomes.

Job Responsibilities:

Lead the implementation of the new mathematics curriculum (Open Up Resources (OUR)) by collaborating with school leaders, instructional staff, and teachers to establish effective, consistent teaching practices.

Design and facilitate professional development sessions in collaboration with the curriculum vendor’s professional development team and the Golden LEAF Schools Coaching team, tailoring sessions to meet the needs of low-performing schools.

Model high-quality instructional strategies and co-teach lessons to demonstrate best practices in math instruction, aligning closely with instructional strategies and routines used in the new curriculum.

Work with Marzano Resources staff and GLSI coaching team to review, revise, and support implementation of mathematics proficiency scales aligned with the OUR curriculum and the NC Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS).

Provide individualized coaching to teachers, observing lessons, offering constructive feedback, and helping refine instructional methods to improve student engagement and learning.

Work closely with the curriculum vendor’s professional development team to troubleshoot and address any implementation challenges, ensuring alignment with vendor guidance and best practices.

Facilitate planning sessions, team meetings, and professional learning communities, supporting teachers in implementing curriculum-based instructional practices effectively.

Valid NC Driver’s License.

Supplemental Information:

The Golden LEAF Schools Initiative is a $25 million program funded by the Golden LEAF Foundation with the aim to improve school performance in North Carolina schools through enhancing school culture, leadership, math instruction, pedagogy, and career readiness. Built on the Marzano High Reliability Schools (HRS) model, the initiative provides participating schools with intensive coaching, resources, and support, particularly in rural areas with economic challenges. Twenty middle schools will participate, divided into two cohorts: the Transformative Schools Cohort (TSC), which will receive comprehensive interventions, and the Personalized, Competency-Based Education Cohort (PCBE), focused on instructional transformation. The initiative emphasizes collaboration, aiming to foster long-term educational improvements and workforce development across the state.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s degree in the education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of specifically related experience in public education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
