Your impact on the team

As an Engineering Manager on Sharpen, you will lead teams of software engineers building one of McGraw Hill's most innovative, fast-growing products—a multi-platform learning experience spanning native mobile apps, AI-driven learning web experiences, and instructor web courseware. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will drive delivery, team health, and technical excellence while partnering cross-functionally to align with product goals. This role requires a highly technical leader with broad experience and exceptional communication and relationship-building skills in a SOX and SOC 2-compliant environment where engineering, security, and operational rigor matter. 

 

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

 

What You'll Do:

  • Lead, coach, and develop software engineering teams while fostering collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Own team commitments and deliver high-quality work on time across Sharpen's mobile apps, AI driven learning experiences, and instructor courseware.
  • Translate product and design requirements into scalable, maintainable technical solutions.
  • Communicate decisions, tradeoffs, status, and risks clearly to stakeholders at all levels, building trust across product, design, engineering, and other partners.
  • Apply broad technical judgment across mobile, web, databases, AWS, and data to guide architecture and technical decisions without micromanaging.
  • Partner with engineering teams and stakeholders to integrate systems effectively and align with platform architecture.
  • Ensure the team's work meets SOX and SOC 2 requirements by embedding controls, auditability, and changing management discipline into daily engineering practices.
  • Encourage modern development practices, including automation and AI-based efficiencies, where appropriate.
    Promote engineering excellence in code quality, testing, performance, delivery, and reliability.
  • Stay current on software development and technology trends to inform strategic decisions and team direction. 

 

What You Bring:

  • Passion for using technology to improve educational outcomes.
  • Strong foundation in computer science or a related field, with 5+ years of software development experience and at least 2 years in an engineering leadership role.
  • Proven ability to lead and grow engineering teams in a collaborative, agile environment.
  • Broad, hands-on technical experience across the stack, including mobile (iOS/Android/Swift), web (JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js), relational and non-relational databases, AWS, and data.
  • Experience building scalable tools or platforms in a product-oriented setting used at scale.
  • Experience operating in a SOX- and/or SOC 2-compliant environment. Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with comfort working across functions and distributed teams.
  • Commitment to innovation, quality, and user-centered development.

Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • Experience in EdTech or with systems that support digital learning.
  • Experience building consumer mobile applications or AI/ML-driven product features.
  • Familiarity with AI or automation in software development workflows.
  • Exposure to platform or infrastructure engineering in a cloud-based environment.
  • Experience building accessible web and mobile applications.

The pay range for this position is between $124,000 - $190,000 annually. However, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.  Additionally, a full range of medical and/or other benefits may be provided, depending on the position offered.
