About Redtree
Redtree Engineering specializes in engineering, project management, and construction support services across mission-critical facilities, power systems, industrial projects, and complex infrastructure, with a particular strength in power plant and power generation design. Redtree offers 100% remote work for this role. As a growing engineering firm, we've built our team around flexibility from day one, giving engineers the ability to do serious, high-impact design work from anywhere in the U.S., without relocating or commuting to an office.
Position Summary
Redtree is seeking a Lead Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer to lead the design and development of process, plant, and building control systems for distributed generation and district energy projects, including electric, steam, chilled water, hot water, and cogeneration facilities. This role executes and leads I&C engineering activities across the full project lifecycle on both EPC and traditional Design-Bid-Build (DBB) projects, ensuring deliverables meet project scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
This is a technical discipline lead role: the Lead I&C Engineer serves as the primary client interface for I&C scope, sets control system design direction, and provides technical oversight and mentorship to staff engineers while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated engineering solutions.
You Will...
Lead I&C engineering activities across all project phases, including front-end loading (FEL-1, FEL-2, FEL-3), detailed design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
Serve as the primary client point of contact for I&C scope: define requirements and design expectations, present technical solutions and design packages, and incorporate client feedback into design.
Support early project development and FEL activities, including scope definition, control system and instrumentation philosophy development, conceptual and preliminary design packages, and input to capital cost estimates and schedules.
Lead the design and development of control system architecture and network design, I/O lists, control narratives, logic diagrams, cause and effect diagrams, HMI/graphics concepts, and interlock matrices.
Develop and manage instrumentation design deliverables, including instrument lists, data sheets, specifications, installation details, and interconnection drawings.
Coordinate the development of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) with process and mechanical engineering teams.
Perform and oversee instrumentation engineering calculations and sizing for control valves, flow measurement devices, thermowells, and other field instruments.
Develop control system design criteria, functional specifications, and system requirements aligned with project and client standards.
Participate in HAZOP studies and design reviews, incorporating findings into control system design.
Lead procurement support activities for I&C scope, including technical specifications, RFQ documentation, bid evaluations, and vendor submittal review.
Coordinate with control system vendors and suppliers, including participation in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
Perform quality reviews of engineering deliverables for compliance with applicable codes, standards, and company procedures.
Provide technical support during construction, installation, and commissioning, including field inspections and issue resolution.
Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to staff engineers, including delegating work assignments and reviewing deliverables.
Coordinate with other engineering and architectural disciplines for a cohesive, integrated design approach.
Prepare and present technical reports, studies, and documentation for clients and internal stakeholders.
If You...
Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, or related degree, from an ABET-accredited
8+ years of relevant design engineering experience; EPC project experience preferred.
Expert knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures, including electrical equipment design per ANSI and IEEE standards.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated experience leading discipline design for large projects and delegating work to team members.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills and ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
Experience developing or reviewing P&IDs, loop diagrams, and instrument data sheets.
Experience developing control logic and system control narratives.
Strong knowledge of instrumentation selection and specification.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
Willingness to travel to project/construction sites as needed (20% estimated).
Demonstrated experience serving in a client-facing technical role and leading I&C discipline design on multidisciplinary projects.
Strong knowledge of instrumentation and control system design principles, practices, and industry standards (ISA, ANSI, IEEE).
Preferred Qualifications
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
Experience supporting process safety reviews (HAZOP, PHA) and developing interlock/control documentation.
