The Power BI Platform Administrator is responsible for administering, securing, and governing the enterprise Microsoft Power BI environment. This role ensures the platform is scalable, secure, and compliant while enabling trusted self-service analytics across the organization. The administrator will implement Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), manage platform operations, and partner with BI developers to deliver secure, high-performing dashboards and semantic models.
ResponsibilitiesPlatform Administration
- Administer and maintain the enterprise Power BI tenant, workspaces, capacities, gateways, and tenant settings.
- Monitor platform health, licensing, usage, and performance.
- Manage deployment pipelines, refresh schedules, and platform upgrades.
- Manage capacity planning, sizing, and cost optimization for Power BI Premium/Fabric capacities.
- Manage on-premises data gateway clusters, data source connections, and credential management.
- Manage platform change control and support cases with Microsoft.
Security & Governance
- Design and implement Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) using Microsoft Entra ID, workspace roles, Row-Level Security (RLS), and Object-Level Security (OLS).
- Establish and enforce governance standards for workspaces, datasets, reports, and content lifecycle management.
- Configure and maintain security policies, permissions, sensitivity labels, and data loss prevention (DLP) controls.
- Ensure compliance with enterprise security and data governance standards.
- Monitor activity logs and audit platform usage for security and compliance purposes.
- Manage secure, governed connectivity between Power BI and enterprise data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Azure SQL).
Dashboard Enablement
- Partner with BI developers and business teams to implement secure dashboards, reports, and semantic models.
- Support report publishing, workspace management, and certified datasets.
- Troubleshoot security, access, and performance issues impacting reports and dashboards.
- Establish certified/promoted content standards and semantic model best practices.
- Support performance tuning of semantic models and reports (DAX and query optimization).
Collaboration & Support
- Provide Level 2/3 support for the Power BI platform.
- Develop administration documentation, standards, and operational procedures.
- Collaborate with Data & Analytics, Information Security, Infrastructure, and business stakeholders to drive platform adoption and best practices.
- Deliver training and enablement to report authors and business users on Power BI best practices.
- Report platform usage, adoption, and performance metrics to leadership.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience administering Microsoft Power BI in an enterprise environment.
- Strong experience with:
- Power BI Service Administration
- Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD)
- Power BI Premium and/or Microsoft Fabric
- On-Premises Data Gateway
- Workspace administration and deployment pipelines
- Hands-on experience implementing RBAC, RLS, OLS, and enterprise governance.
- Experience supporting or developing Power BI dashboards and semantic models.
- Proficiency with PowerShell and Power BI Admin APIs is preferred.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Microsoft certifications such as PL-300, Microsoft Fabric Analytics Engineer, or Azure Administrator.
- Experience with Snowflake, Azure, Azure DevOps, Git, and enterprise data governance tools (e.g., Atlan or Alation).
- Experience with DAX performance tuning and semantic model optimization.
- Experience with monitoring/observability tools for platform monitoring.
- ITIL or change management experience in an enterprise environment.
