Indirect Tax Lead - (REMOTE)

What you will do:

The Indirect Tax Lead serves as the strategist and subject matter expert for the company's indirect tax footprint, primarily driving our domestic strategy while providing ad hoc support to international.

Sales and Use tax compliance is fully outsourced to a managed compliance provider. This is a strategic thinking and problem-solving position designed for a highly analytical, agile professional who naturally challenges the status quo, introduces innovative frameworks, and thrives in a dynamic environment requiring high autonomy, adaptability, and an acute awareness of broader business operations.

The Lead will focus on the strategic optimization of domestic Sales & Use tax, Property tax, Gross Receipts tax and other indirect taxes, while partnering cross-functionally to enable enterprise business growth.

This role requires a forward-looking, tech-forward operator who can optimize our Vertex-to-Oracle ecosystem, leverage advanced technology and AI tools to maximize research efficiencies, and successfully navigate complex, ambiguous tax implications with total independence.

How you will make an impact:

• Proactive Ownership & Enterprise Thinking: Demonstrate anticipatory leadership by identifying tax risks and legislative exposures before they impact the organization. Actively drive solutions with a holistic, big-picture mindset, ensuring that tax policies and system decisions are implemented with deep sensitivity to day-to-day business operations and user experiences.
• Nexus & Taxability Governance: Own the company’s recurring nexus study and taxability review cadence. Monitor economic and physical nexus thresholds across all jurisdictions, refresh product and service taxability determinations as offerings evolve, and manage resulting registrations and de-registrations to maintain a defensible, current footprint.
• Business Advisory & Strategic Partnership: Serve as the primary internal consultant to Brokerage Ops, Oracle/IT, and Corporate Development. Proactively evaluate new revenue streams, product bundles, and commercial contracts to architect optimal tax structures prior to market launch.
• Domestic & International Indirect Tax Strategy: Function as the architect for the domestic indirect tax footprint (Sales & Use, Property, Gross Receipts etc.) and provide secondary technical guidance for international indirect tax frameworks (VAT, GST, HST) during new country launches or in response to complex, cross-border transactional inquiries.
• AI & Process Innovation: Actively leverage AI and advanced research tools to accelerate technical tax research, streamline repetitive data workflows, and drive maximum operational efficiency across the tax function.
• System Ecosystem Governance: Oversee and continually optimize the taxability rules, product mapping, and exemption logic within our automated tax environment (Vertex integrated with Oracle Cloud). Ensure our systems are dynamically aligned with ever-changing corporate offerings and tax policies.
• Compliance Vendor Management: Own the governance, data workflows, and accountability for outsourced compliance partner. Prepare and transmit source data from internal systems to the provider each cycle, perform final review and approval of returns prior to filing, and ensure seamless data integrity and reconciliation between internal systems and external provider.
• Audit Defense: Lead and defend the company in state and local indirect tax audits, and support as needed international indirect audits. Formulate defensive tax positions, manage auditor relationships, and minimize corporate financial exposure.

How you will grab our attention:

Education & Credentials:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Highly Valued: Master’s degree in accounting or taxation or professional certification (CPA or CMI or equivalent).

Experience:

• 8+ years of dedicated Indirect Tax experience, heavily weighted toward domestic Sales & Use, Property, and Gross Receipts tax strategy.
• Deep, practical familiarity with managing the Vertex engine plug-in and its integration with Oracle for accurate sales tax determination/automation.
• Background in SaaS, technology, or other high-growth environments.
• Highly Valued: Experience with voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs) and remediating historical sales tax exposures.
• Highly Valued: Experience supporting international indirect tax strategy (VAT/GST) during global market expansions or in response to ad-hoc cross-border technical inquiries.
