The Head of Year plays a central role in leading and shaping the academic progress, wellbeing, and personal development of students within a specific year group. As a key member of the pastoral leadership team, the Head of Year ensures that all students receive high-quality support, both academically and personally, so they can thrive and achieve their full potential. The role centres around monitoring and tracking student progress and wellbeing, supporting tutors, and co-ordinating the delivery of a strong pastoral curriculum aligned with the school’s values and strategic vision. Reporting directly to the Head of Key Stage, the Head of Year provides day-to-day operational leadership of the year group, acting as a visible and approachable figure for students, parents, and staff. This involves leading a team of tutors, delivering assemblies and key events, and supporting the enrichment of the wider curriculum. A crucial aspect of the role is the use of data and evidence to monitor standards, plan interventions, and support students' academic journeys, working closely with Heads of Subject and other key stakeholders to ensure no child is left behind. The Head of Year supports the delivery of the school’s ethos and pastoral care strategy, strengthens relationships between home and school, and contributes to school-wide initiatives aimed at maintaining high academic standards, excellent student satisfaction, and strong retention rates. As part of the extended leadership team, the post-holder is also expected to uphold high standards of professional practice, model excellence in teaching, and contribute to the overall strategic direction of the school.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of a year group, providing clear vision, direction, and support to a team of tutors and a cohort of students.
• Monitor and support student academic progress and wellbeing, using data and valid evidence to inform intervention strategies and pastoral planning.
• Develop, co-ordinate, and deliver a broad, balanced, and relevant pastoral and co-curricular programme that meets the diverse needs of students and supports the school’s aims.
• Act as a key liaison between tutors, Heads of Subject, students, and parents to ensure effective communication and support for all stakeholders.
• Lead and organise year group events, including weekly assemblies, induction sessions, reflective lessons, and enrichment activities.
• Serve as the first escalation point for student and parent issues and concerns, ensuring timely and effective resolution and clear communication.
• Support the implementation of relevant sections of the School Development Plan, reporting on progress and developments to the Head of Key Stage and Executive Head as required.
• Model excellence in the classroom and uphold high standards of teaching, learning, and behaviour for learning within the year group.
• Actively strengthen relationships between home and school, fostering parental engagement and supporting marketing activities to promote the school to prospective families.
• Work collaboratively with the Key Stage Head and fellow Heads of Year to develop and refine the vision and strategic direction of the school, contributing to academic outcomes, student satisfaction, and retention.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

• Proven experience of successfully leading a tutor team, year group, or pastoral provision, demonstrating strong leadership and management skills.
• A deep understanding of student personal development, pastoral care, and academic progress monitoring, underpinned by excellent data analysis and intervention planning abilities.
• A strong commitment to safeguarding, student welfare, and inclusion, with the ability to support a wide range of student needs and backgrounds sensitively and effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage confidently and empathetically with students, staff, and parents.
• A clear understanding of, and commitment to, the school’s ethos, values, and vision, with the ability to promote and uphold these across all aspects of school life.
• Experience of leading assemblies, pastoral programmes, or enrichment activities that contribute to the holistic development of students.
• The ability to model outstanding teaching practice and uphold high standards of learning, behaviour, and personal conduct.
• A collaborative and solutions-focused approach, with the ability to work effectively as part of a wider leadership team to deliver strategic goals.
• Resilience, flexibility, and the capacity to go above and beyond in supporting both students and colleagues as part of a dynamic and supportive school community.
• Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to balance operational, pastoral, and strategic responsibilities effectively.
