Grant Research Analyst

The Grants Research Analyst is an entry-level position for a curious, driven individual eager to build expertise in the federal and state grants landscape. This role is central to our mission of connecting local governments, public agencies, and utilities with the funding they need to move meaningful projects forward.

This is a research role, not a data analytics position. We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in public policy, government, and public funding, who cares about getting resources into the hands of the public agencies and communities that need them. If you get satisfaction from helping a county, city, or water district fund a project that matters to its residents, this work will resonate with you.

The ideal candidate brings intellectual curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a real interest in how public funding works. This position works in a modern, AI-assisted research environment, so candidates should be comfortable using AI tools as part of their daily workflow and ready to use technology to work faster and smarter.

No prior grants experience is required; we will train the right person. What we cannot teach is drive, coachability, reliability, and a willingness to learn.

This is a remote position that depends on trust and self-management. We expect people who are available and responsive during working hours and who take ownership of their time and their work. Reliability during the workday is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and develop working knowledge of federal and state grant programs, funding cycles, and eligibility requirements across a range of sectors.
  • Research and identify grant opportunities that fit client project needs, funding priorities, and organizational capacity.
  • Help build grant strategies and funding pipelines by matching grant opportunities to defined client projects.
  • Think critically about how a grant opportunity could align to a project, including where a project's scope might be widened or narrowed to fit a program's requirements.
  • Use grants research tools to speed up opportunity identification and pull together program information efficiently.
  • Read across grant programs to understand which funders are prioritizing what, and use that context to inform client strategy.
  • Read program guidelines and funding notices closely and synthesize the key points into clear, concise summaries for internal review and client delivery.
  • Support client intake and service, learning to understand client goals, translate them into funding needs, and communicate findings professionally.
  • Perform accurate data entry and keep grant research, client projects, and program information well organized in our internal tracking systems.
  • Work with senior staff to refine research approaches and continuously improve the quality and relevance of funding recommendations.
  • Stay current on changes to federal and state grant programs through agency announcements, Federal Register notices, and other primary sources.
  • Contribute to a culture of excellence, responsiveness, and client-first service.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public administration, public policy, political science, economics, communications, English, journalism, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Genuine interest in local government, public policy, and public funding.
  • Exceptional research skills with the ability to read, absorb, and synthesize large amounts of information quickly and accurately.
  • Strong reading comprehension and the ability to distill complex program information into clear, accurate summaries.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); comfort working in digital research environments.
  • Working proficiency with AI tools (such as Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, or similar platforms); ability to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs and apply them to research tasks.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities at once.
  • Reliable and self-directed, with the discipline to stay available and productive in a remote environment.
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and a proactive approach to learning new subject matter.
  • Collaborative, friendly, and low-ego, with a commitment to team goals and client outcomes.

Preferred (Not Required) Qualifications

  • Familiarity with government grant resources (Grants.gov, SAM.gov, USASpending.gov) or similar research platforms.
  • Coursework, internship, or project experience in government, nonprofit, public policy, or public finance settings.
  • Experience using AI tools for professional research.
  • Exposure to client services, consulting, or advisory roles.
  • Familiarity with the water sector, public utilities, or infrastructure funding.
