COMPENSATION: $90,000 annually

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

Under the direction of the Director of Accelerated Sciences, the Full-Time Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality undergraduate science instruction within the University's accelerated, non-degree instructional model. Accelerated Sciences courses serve a diverse population of learners and are delivered primarily in intensive five-week online asynchronous formats. This is a Regular, Full-Time Teaching Faculty appointment at the academic rank of Instructor, with an anticipated January 2027 (Spring Term) start.

The position carries a 1.0 FTE workload consisting of approximately 80% teaching, 10% service, and 10% scholarship in accordance with University standards for full-time teaching faculty in non-degree programs. The Full-Time Instructor serves as a core member of the Accelerated Sciences instructional faculty, providing continuity and consistency across courses and sections while supporting student learning, academic quality, faculty collaboration, and ongoing instructional development.

We are particularly interested in candidates qualified to teach undergraduate lecture courses in one or more of the following areas: Biological Sciences - Anatomy & Physiology, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Microbiology; Chemistry - General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry. Primary teaching assignments are lecture courses and are based on academic qualifications, disciplinary expertise, and instructional needs. Faculty may also provide secondary instructional support to related laboratory sections within their area of expertise as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Student Learning - 80%

• Teach assigned undergraduate lecture courses within the Accelerated Sciences five-week instructional model, with teaching responsibilities throughout the University’s nine annual Accelerated Sciences blocks.
• Deliver effective, evidence-informed instruction consistent with approved syllabi, learning outcomes, academic policies, and established course standards.
• Maintain regular and substantive interaction (RSI) with students in online courses through frequent, predictable, faculty-initiated academic engagement throughout each accelerated course.
• Maintain course materials, instructional content, announcements, grading, and student communication within Canvas and other required University systems.
• Grade student work and provide timely, constructive, and meaningful feedback consistent with Accelerated Sciences and University expectations.
• Monitor student academic engagement, progress, and performance; take prompt and proactive action when concerns arise and refer or escalate students through established University and Accelerated Sciences processes as appropriate.
• Maintain regular, clearly communicated availability for student meetings and office hours and provide additional instructional or tutoring support as appropriate.
• Facilitate exam review sessions and other course-level academic support activities for students across relevant course sections as assigned.
• Serve as a secondary instructor, instructional resource, or teaching assistant for additional sections and related courses within the faculty member’s area of expertise as assigned, including support to related laboratory sections when appropriate.
• Participate in course preparation, maintenance, revision, development, and assessment activities to support instructional quality, consistency, and continuous improvement.
• Maintain current subject matter expertise and incorporate appropriate disciplinary developments and evidence-informed teaching practices into instruction.
• Participate in required faculty onboarding, pre-term training, faculty development, and other professional development activities.
• Collaborate closely with the Accelerated Sciences Academic team and Director to identify instructional issues, student concerns, faculty support needs, course-level trends, and opportunities for improvement.
• Identify potential training or instructional support needs among adjunct faculty and communicate those needs to the Accelerated Sciences Academic team for appropriate follow-up.
• Support instructional consistency across multiple sections of courses within the faculty member’s disciplinary area.
• Fulfill routine faculty administrative responsibilities associated with teaching, including timely submission of grades, required course documentation, syllabi, schedules, office-hour information, and other assigned instructional materials.
• Monitor official University and course communication channels and respond within established University expectations.

Scholarship – 10%

• Maintain an active program of scholarly, professional, or research activity appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline and academic rank.
• Remain current in disciplinary knowledge, pedagogy, and developments relevant to undergraduate science education.
• Participate in scholarly or professional activities consistent with University faculty expectations and maintain appropriate documentation for faculty performance appraisal and rank advancement.

Institutional and Academic Service - 10%

• Participate in Expected Service Activities (ESA), including University committees, councils, working groups, and other institutional service activities as appointed or assigned.
• Participate actively in Accelerated Sciences faculty meetings, academic discussions, training activities, and divisional initiatives.
• Support faculty collaboration within assigned disciplines, including participation in or facilitation of course-specific faculty meetings, training, and instructional discussions as needed.
• Contribute subject-matter expertise to divisional and University initiatives and promote the University’s mission, vision, values, and objectives through professional service and engagement.

ATTENDANCE:

Must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks, where applicable. Because Accelerated Sciences operates through multiple intensive five-week instructional blocks throughout the year, the faculty member is expected to remain actively engaged in teaching, course preparation, student support, scholarship, service, faculty development, and other assigned responsibilities throughout the annual appointment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. The Full-Time Instructor works collaboratively with Accelerated Sciences adjunct faculty and may provide subject-matter guidance, instructional support, training, and course-level coordination as assigned. Formal personnel management, performance management, and administrative oversight remain the responsibility of Accelerated Sciences leadership and designated academic staff.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• Master’s degree or doctorate in a relevant scientific discipline from an accredited college or university required.
• Academic preparation sufficient to teach undergraduate lecture courses within the faculty member’s assigned discipline required.
• Undergraduate teaching experience strongly preferred.
• Experience teaching accelerated, online, asynchronous, or non-traditional learners preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to teach and support multiple courses within the candidate’s disciplinary area preferred.
• Experience with curriculum development, course development, assessment, or instructional improvement preferred.
• Relevant laboratory knowledge or experience within the candidate’s disciplinary area preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional and academic materials; communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken English; present instructional content to diverse learners; and communicate professionally with students, faculty, staff, and University leadership.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and standard workplace technologies.
• Ability to effectively use technologies required for online asynchronous teaching, student communication, assessment, remote proctoring, and academic collaboration.
• Proficiency with, or ability to quickly learn, Canvas and other web-based learning management, assessment, communication, and instructional systems.
• Ability to use University faculty-management and workload systems, including Interfolio, for faculty performance appraisal, portfolio documentation, workload tracking, and rank advancement.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

No specific professional license or certification is required unless applicable to the faculty member’s assigned discipline or required by University policy or applicable regulatory standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of the position. The role regularly requires prolonged computer use, virtual and in-person communication, reading and reviewing electronic course materials, and participation in meetings and instructional activities. WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily in a remote professional environment with onsite responsibilities as assigned. The position requires reliable internet access and the ability to work effectively using University-approved technologies. Onsite work may occur in academic, classroom, laboratory, meeting, or office environments. The faculty member must be able to work effectively within the fast-paced cadence of five-week accelerated courses and multiple instructional blocks throughout the year.
