AI Summary

The Field Operations Manager will oversee the entire customer lifecycle from signup to a live, dispatch-ready residential battery system. This includes managing system design, procurement, permitting, installer network relationships, and operational process development.

About Flip Energy

Flip Energy is a residential battery virtual power plant (VPP) company operating as an independent distributed power provider (IDPP). We deploy residential battery systems through third-party ownership (TPO) agreements and a network of installer partners, sign long-term capacity contracts with utilities, and dispatch the fleet through our proprietary gateway platform. We're small, moving fast, and building the operational backbone for a business that scales installer-by-installer and market-by-market.

The Role

We're looking for someone to own the customer the moment they sign up — deciding whether they're actually a good fit for a Flip system, then taking them all the way through installation to a live, dispatch-ready system — and to build the installer network and operational systems that make that repeatable at scale. Flip designs and procures for our own systems — we standardize on our own hardware, buy batteries in bulk directly from OEMs, and hand off only the physical installation to our network of partner installers. This role owns everything on our side of that line: design, sourcing, qualification, permitting, scheduling, and the partners who put it all in the ground. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role: part project manager, part customer advocate, part engineer, part buyer, part partnerships lead, part process builder. You'll be the person who's directly in charge of getting a new customer live, and the person who builds the muscle so that stays true as we grow.

What You'll Do

  • Own the customer from signup to live — from the moment someone signs up, you're accountable for getting them to a live, dispatch-ready system, and for everything that happens in between.

  • Own customer qualification — decide whether a home and homeowner are actually a good fit for a Flip system at all.

  • Own engineering design — turn our standardized system design into a site-specific plan for each install, making sure it holds up to code, permitting, and interconnection requirements.

  • Own procurement — manage bulk battery purchasing directly from our OEM partners, negotiate pricing and terms, and keep supply flowing so installers always have hardware when they need it.

  • Project-manage the install end to end — keep every install moving, catch problems before they become delays, and make the process smooth and predictable.

  • Own permitting and interconnection — you drive these to completion, working utility and jurisdiction processes so installs aren't stuck waiting on paperwork.

  • Own scheduling, hardware support, and O&M for your customers — not just fielding their questions, but actually running these so nothing falls through the cracks.

  • Build and manage the installer network — recruit new installer partners, negotiate contracts, and own the ongoing relationship so partners are set up to perform.

  • Own installer training — make sure every partner installer knows how to install, configure, and support our hardware and program to spec.

  • Build the processes and automations behind all of the above — you're not just running the playbook, you're writing it, and looking for ways to take manual work off your own plate as volume grows.

What You'll Bring

  • Experience in residential solar, battery storage, or home services operations — you've project-managed installs or field work before and know where things typically go wrong.

  • Direct experience with permitting and utility interconnection processes.

  • Experience with residential solar or battery system design — comfortable adapting a standardized design to a specific site and defending it through plan check.

  • Experience with hardware or component procurement — negotiating with manufacturers, managing supply and lead times, comfortable owning a purchasing relationship.

  • Experience managing or negotiating with subcontractor or installer networks — you're comfortable being the one who signs partners up and holds them accountable.

  • Strong project management instincts and the organizational rigor to run many installs in parallel without dropping details.

  • Comfort being customer-facing — clear, calm communication under the kind of pressure that shows up when someone's home system isn't going as planned.

  • A builder's mindset — you'd rather design the process and automate the repeat work than run the same manual steps forever.

  • Comfort with ambiguity and a fast-moving, early-stage environment where your scope will expand as the company grows.

  • Willing and able to travel regularly — this isn't a desk job. You'll be on-site at customer homes and with installer partners often, not just managing things over email.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with TPO (third-party ownership) or virtual power plant / demand response programs.

  • Existing relationships with residential solar or battery installers.

  • Experience standing up or scaling an operations function from scratch.

  • Preference for candidates located in Maine.

What Flip Energy Offers

  • The chance to build a core operating function at an early-stage company from the ground up.

  • Direct ownership over a part of the business that's core to how fast we can grow.

  • A small, high-context team where your work has visible, immediate impact.

  • Compensation: $95k-125k/year.

  • Equity: 0.1-0.25%.

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance (U.S.).

  • Flexible PTO and remote-first work environment.

  • Occasional in-person team meetups (we cover travel).
