We are a remote-first company. Our headquarters are in Toronto, a Canada location is considered a preferred.

The Role

As an Embedded Developer at Interaxon, you'll be helping to improve and build EEG and biosensing wearables. You are experienced in digital signal processing in low power, wireless embedded systems, and real time processing of continuous time series data. This is a small team, so the role reaches from the bootloader up: you will own firmware releases end to end for shipping products, bring up hardware for the products that come next, and be the firmware voice in conversations with our app, cloud, QA and manufacturing partners. We do not expect you to arrive knowing our whole stack. What we need is someone who has done this kind of learning before and can do it without a firmware team around them.

What you'll be doing:

You will be writing code in C for embedded controllers, and communicating effectively with other teams within InteraXon. Day to day, that means:

• Owning firmware releases end to end — scope, code freeze, QA and regression cycles, release notes, inter-team communications. You are the person who decides a build is ready to go through the release process.
• Maintaining and extending the shipping of STM32 firmware while bringing up new platforms in parallel.
• Bluetooth Communication — BLE protocol design, throughput and latency, connection reliability, and debugging connection issues reported from the field across a wide range of phones.
• Bluetooth audio: codec integration, I2S/PDM microphone and speaker paths, and audio-over-Bluetooth alongside continuous sensor streaming.
• Biosignal acquisition — EEG, PPG and fNIRS front ends, sensor presets, on-device filtering, stream formats and telemetry.
• Power — PMIC configuration, fuel gauging, low-power and sleep modes, and the battery-life work that follows from them.
• Field debugging — working back from a customer symptom to a root cause in firmware, hardware or the app. Using hardware logs, persistent on-device logging, RTT capture, crash reporting and product analytics.
• Manufacturing and test — factory test firmware, flashing flows, test-time reduction, and the internal tooling the hardware and factory teams rely on.
• New hardware bring-up — eval boards for peripherals, PMICs, batteries, new sensors; reading datasheets and schematics, running the measurements, and feeding the results back into the next PCB revision.
• Working across teams and time zones — with the mobile app team , with cloud team, with QA on regression coverage, with research on data validation, with customer care on field issues, and directly with our contract manufacturing partner in Asia.
• Writing professional documentation that other engineers can actually work from — architecture notes, protocol specs, release documentation and onboarding material.

You will also learn and improve your understanding of meditation.

What you need on day one:

• 5+ years of embedded firmware in C and scripting in Python.
• Experience with RTOS (ThreadX, Zephyr, etc) or bringing up an unfamiliar vendor SDK. PCB communication protocols, I2C, SPI, UART, JTAG/SWD, etc. ; STM32 an asset
• Experience owning firmware releases, not only writing features — versioning, branching, release criteria.
• You are comfortable driving firmware projects by yourself, can design firmware architecture and create scalable firmware protocols.
• Experience with secure bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms; MCUboot or comparable, image signing, rollback protection, image signing and encryption
• Experience with BLE, including protocol design and debugging real-world connection problems
• Able to read schematics and component datasheets, bring up an eval board, take the measurements yourself, and give electrical engineers useful feedback on circuit design
• Comfortable with hardware debug tooling — J-Link / ST-Link, SWD, SWO/RTT, logic analyzers and oscilloscopes

Bonus

• Experience with consumer audio (earbuds, headsets, hearables) and Bluetooth audio stacks (Classic and LE Audio).
• Experience with biosignals on wearables or medical-device firmware
• Familiarity with analog and digital signal processing, and with sensor front ends
• Low-power design, PMICs and fuel gauging
• Familiarity with software development life cycle and agile methodology, CI/CD and hardware-in-the-loop testing for embedded
• Working with contract manufacturers or offshore engineering partners; factory test systems
• Willingness to learn and practice meditation
