As an Email Security Engineer, the candidate will provide advanced engineering and architecture support for the company’s Exchange environment, including Exchange Online, Office 365, hybrid, and on-premises systems. The role is responsible for designing, supporting, and improving enterprise messaging capabilities across email, SMTP, distribution lists, shared mailboxes, transport services, and mail flow integrations. The candidate will also own operational support for Exchange security platforms and controls, including Proofpoint, DMARC, SPF, DKIM, EOP, and related third-party messaging gateways. This position partners closely with Managed Security Services (MSS) resources, Microsoft, third-party vendors, security operations, infrastructure, and application teams to troubleshoot complex issues, manage escalations, improve security posture, and ensure messaging services remain reliable, secure, compliant, and aligned to enterprise architecture standards.
The successful candidate may be located in Indianapolis, IN, Johnston, IA, or, for highly qualified individuals, remotely within the United States.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Manage and coordinate change(s) impacting messaging and related applications.
- Lead incident response efforts within service delivery for any incidents impacting mail and related applications.
- Provide senior-level engineering support for Exchange Online, Exchange hybrid, on-premises Exchange, SMTP relay, transport, and related messaging services.
- Provide architecture support for mail flow, Exchange topology, hybrid connectivity, identity integration, security controls, and future-state messaging roadmaps.
- Responsible for change, release management, and testing associated with non-impact, operational readiness, and transition acceptance.
- Responsibility to deliver on projects for Exchange user Migrations, AD data integration with messaging platforms etc.
- Responsible for communications and interfacing with internal and external stakeholders impacted, or potentially impacted, by service disruption, additions, changes, and/or reductions in service.
- Responsible for information security and compliance in relation to messaging environment.
- Administer and improve Exchange security tooling and controls, including Proofpoint, DMARC, SPF, DKIM, EOP, anti-phishing, anti-spoofing, email authentication, quarantine, policy tuning, and secure mail routing.
- Partner with Managed Security Services (MSS) resources to investigate email security events, coordinate response actions, tune detections and policies, and support continuous improvement of messaging security operations.
- Lead complex troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for escalated messaging, mail flow, authentication, delivery, and security incidents across internal teams and external service providers.
- Maintenance and review of KB Articles, documentation.
Technical Competencies and Experience
- Senior-level experience architecting, engineering, administering, and supporting enterprise Exchange environments, including Exchange Online, Microsoft 365, Exchange hybrid, and on-premises Exchange.
- Strong hands-on experience with Exchange security tools and messaging gateways such as Proofpoint, Cisco, Mimecast, Microsoft EOP, and related mail sanitation and threat protection platforms.
- Hands on experience of working with Microsoft Exchange Server 2019/SE and Office 365.
- Deep understanding of Exchange transport, SMTP, TLS, connectors, mail routing, hybrid mail flow, accepted domains, relays, and message hygiene controls.
- Good understanding of Exchange databases, MBX and CAS server model.
- Good understanding of Active Directory and Azure Active Directory.
- Good understanding of O365 Licensing services and offerings.
- Microsoft Exchange Online Implementation and management Experience.
- Working knowledge of implementing compliance policies and RBAC model.
- Some PowerShell scripting understanding to write scripts for implementing changes, troubleshooting issues for large number of users.
- Experience in implementing whitelisting, relays and compliance in Messaging gateways and EOP (Exchange Online protection).
- Experience implementing and supporting email authentication and domain protection controls, including DMARC, SPF, DKIM, domain alignment, spoofing protection, and reporting-based remediation.
- Experience working with MSS providers, SOC teams, and security operations resources to manage email security incidents, tune controls, review detections, and support operational handoffs.
- Experience working with Vendors, SLAs, product roadmaps, and support lifecycles.
- Understanding of Directory Synchronization/AD Connect/Microsoft Entra Connect sync.
- ITIL and Microsoft certifications is a plus.
- Experience in Active directory and Microsoft Exchange hybrid servers is desirable.
