Overview

Established in 2004, the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is Internews' flagship environmental journalism program, working to strengthen the quality, accuracy and impact of environmental reporting around the world. Supported by a diverse portfolio of institutional donors, philanthropic foundations and strategic partners, EJN works with journalists, media organizations and civil society to improve public understanding of environmental and climate issues, promote accountability and support informed decision-making.

Across Asia and the Pacific, EJN has built a strong network of journalists and media partners through grants, training, mentoring, reporting fellowships and collaborative investigations. The program supports the production of high-quality reporting on climate change, biodiversity, pollution, natural resource management and other environmental challenges, while helping to amplify the voices of communities most affected by environmental degradation, including women, Indigenous Peoples and other marginalized groups.

EJN supports the Mekong Eye regional environmental news platform, which produces in-depth and investigates environmental stories by partnering with local journalists and media outlets across Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Vietnam Coordinator will contribute to EJN’s journalism projects in Vietnam by coordinating activities, editing Vietnamese content for Mekong Eye, supervising and supporting local journalists and sub grantees, assisting with the development of reporters’ resources in the Vietnamese language and implementing activities that will boost environmental coverage in the country.

About the role of EJN Vietnam Coordinator :

·        Part-time (50% Level of Effort) or 10 days/month, Remote, Flexible hours

·        5-months contract – Aug 1 to Dec 31, 2026. Will be extended, pending satisfactory performance.

We are looking for a passionate project coordinator, with experience in implementing project activities and liaising with local partners. The ideal candidate will also have experience and skills in journalism, inand can provide mentorship to journalists, story editing and supporting investigative journalism. The key qualities we are looking for include good understanding of environmental, climate change and energy transition issues in Vietnam’s context, good network with local NGO and preferably local media and journalists, and good understanding of  cross-cutting issues connecting environment, climate change and other sectors including energy, forest governance, gender equality and social inclusion.

You will support the implementation and coordination of EJN’s strategy and activities in Vietnam, including organizing and coordinating media training workshops and webinar, identifying and coordinating with local partners, journalists and media for the delivery of project activities and outputs, and preferably mentor journalists in the story production to ensure the successful delivery of their stories. 

You will also join the Mekong Eye’s editorial team to strengthen its audience engagement, network with local journalists, facilitate the creation of content on Vietnam (both for website and social media), and assist in fund raising. You will also support the editorial team in putting together the weekly Mekong Eye newsletters that inform audiences about environmental news updates and policies.

Please note that if no candidates with both project coordination and journalism skills are identified, this position may focus only on project activities implementation and coordination with and supervision of local partners, and journalism trainer and mentors will be hired separately.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

·        Coordinate with local partners and EJN team to deliver activities under the project, including media training, story grants and mentorship, webinar and speaker arrangement.

·        Provide support for and assist with designing workshop’s components, with the emphasis on energy, forest governance, water-climate nexus and gender lens. 

·        Participate in events organized by local partners and report back to EJN.

·        Mentor Vietnamese grantees receiving support from EJN and ensure their successful deliveries. Review and provide feedback on grantee stories and on ways to improve them.

·        Translating and editing stories and tipsheet for publication on EJN and Mekong Eye websites.

·        Provide country-specific media expertise and suggest the strategy to engage with Vietnamese media and expand EJN and Mekong Eye reach.

·        Identify local media and civil society organizations that are interested in partnering with or participating in activities organized by EJN and Mekong Eye.

·        Participate in the judging, mentoring and supervision of EJN’s individual and organizational grantees.

·        Assist with the development of new projects in Vietnam, including contributing to project concept notes and proposals, and meeting potential funders.

·        Represent EJN and Mekong Eye in Vietnam by attending meetings and conferences.  

·        Serve as a trainer or facilitator for media workshop when needed.

·        Identify story ideas and strategies in Vietnam that the Mekong Eye editorial team can pursue.

·        Curate environmental stories for Mekong Eye’s weekly newsletter

·        Arrange story posts on Mekong Eye’s website and social media platforms.

·        Support the establishment of a Vietnamese language option for Mekong Eye

·        Assist with other tasks and projects, as needed.

Experience you will need:

·        At least three years of experience in project coordination or program management, and at least five years of experience in environmental and climate journalism in the Mekong region.

·        Experience in editorial roles, mentoring journalists, managing or asset with managing reporting projects. Experience in producing multimedia and social media content is an advantage.

·        Strong network of media in Vietnam, with the ability to identify, engage, support, and maintain relationships with local reporting talent and stakeholders.

·        Tech-savvy, with experience using WordPress and other digital publishing tools.

·        Fluency in written and spoken Vietnamese and English.

·        Strong understanding of environmental and climate issues in the Mekong region, including climate change, biodiversity, energy, forest governance, and gender-sensitive reporting, with a good understanding of local contexts.

·        Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in multicultural teams across countries and time zones, support multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize competing tasks, and meet deadlines under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.

Desirable

·        At least three years of experience in project coordination or program management, and at least five years of experience in environmental and climate journalism in the Mekong region.

·        Strong network of media in Vietnam

·        Fluency in written and spoken Vietnamese and English
