AI Summary

Lead the strategy and roadmap for Zillow's developer platform, focusing on AI-assisted development and the 'paved path' for software engineering. Manage a team of Product Managers to improve engineering productivity and enable non-engineering personas to contribute to the product lifecycle.

About the team

At Zillow Group, our mission is to empower people to unlock life's next chapter. The Platform Product team delivers on this mission by building the foundational platforms and developer capabilities that power consumer, partner, and employee experiences at Zillow.

The Developer Experience (DevEx) team owns the paved path for how Zillow builds software, from local environment and IDE through CI/CD, observability, the internal developer portal, AI-assisted development tooling, and the agentic workflows that increasingly sit alongside human engineers in the SDLC. Our charter is simple: make it dramatically easier for every product team at Zillow to build better, faster, more independent, and higher-quality software, and to do it with AI as a first-class collaborator, not a bolt-on.

About the role

We are seeking a Director of Product Management, Developer Experience to lead the strategy, roadmap, and product team responsible for the next generation of Zillow's developer platform. This role reports to the VP of Product, Platform and manages a team of 4+ Product Managers partnered tightly with Engineering, AI Platform, Security, and our staff/principal engineering community.

You will own the bet that AI fundamentally reshapes how software is built at Zillow. We expect your team to deliver tools that (a) materially increase engineering productivity and (b) progressively enable non-engineering builders (product managers, designers, data scientists, business operators) to accelerate the product lifecycle through guarded, agentic, paved-path experiences. This is a high-leverage, cross-Zillow role. Your work will directly influence how every product team at Zillow ships, how fast we can iterate on consumer experiences, and how we compound the productivity advantage of being an AI-native company.

You will Get to:

  • Partner with the Senior Director of Engineering, Developer Experience to set and own the multi-year vision and roadmap for DevEx at Zillow, spanning the inner dev loop, CI/CD and release, observability, the internal developer portal, and the AI/agentic toolchain.

  • Lead and grow a high-performing team of Product Managers, each owning a critical surface area of the DevEx portfolio.

  • Partner with VP-level engineering leaders across Zillow Group to co-own outcomes and ensure adoption.

  • Define the strategy for AI-assisted and agentic development at Zillow, including how we evaluate, govern, and roll out AI coding tools; how we measure their impact; and how we extend them to non-engineering personas safely.

  • Make DevEx a measurable business: instrument and report developer satisfaction, DORA/SPACE-style outcomes, AI-leveraged throughput, and adoption of the paved path across the company.

  • Drive the DevEx strategy and roadmap for a portfolio that includes the inner dev loop (IDE, local environments, AI coding assistants), CI/CD and release engineering, observability and incident response tooling, the internal developer portal, and platform service enablement.

  • Define and execute Zillow's AI-for-development strategy: selecting, integrating, and evaluating coding assistants, agentic SDLC tools, and review/quality automation; setting the standards for safe, governed use; and shaping how each surface area becomes AI-native, not AI-adjacent.

  • Accelerate the product lifecycle through paved-path experiences that let non-engineering personas (PMs, designers, ops) contribute through guarded agentic workflows, with the right test, review, and rollout guardrails.

  • Treat internal teams as customers, leading rigorous discovery with engineers, EMs, staff/principal engineers, and adjacent personas; turning developer pain into prioritized, instrumented bets.

  • Drive adoption and measurable outcomes: making the paved path so valuable that product teams choose it first; reporting DevEx impact in business terms (cycle time, change-failure rate, developer satisfaction, AI leverage ratio, % of changes shipped via paved road).

  • Partner deeply with engineering leadership to co-own the platform: shared roadmaps, shared OKRs, shared on-call and incident posture.

  • Lead and develop the PM team: hiring, coaching, and raising the bar on Platform-as-a-Product thinking; representing the portfolio in VP+ forums.

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $231,000.00 - $369,000.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations. In Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia the standard base pay range for this role is $219,500.00 - $350,600.00 annually. In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. Employees in this role will not be paid below the salary threshold for exempt employees in the state where they reside.

Who you are

  • Experienced platform product leader (10+ years in PM, with significant time on developer-facing, infrastructure, or platform products). You've led multi-team, multi-year roadmaps at a Director level and shipped tools that engineers genuinely love using.

  • Deeply technical and AI-fluent. You are conversant with staff and principal engineers on architecture trade-offs, SDLC tooling, and the current frontier of AI-assisted and agentic development. You have a clear, opinionated point of view on where AI changes the shape of how software is built, and where it doesn't.

  • Platform-as-a-Product believer. You treat internal customers like external ones: discovery, instrumentation, adoption funnels, and the discipline to retire what isn't working.

  • Builder-mentality leader. You can sit down and prototype with an AI coding assistant yourself. You hire and develop PMs who do the same, and you set a bar that the team's daily work (PRDs, evals, customer research, dashboards) is itself AI-leveraged.

  • Exceptional collaborator and communicator. You build trust with VP-level engineering partners by being technically credible, candidly direct, and consistently outcome-focused. You can pitch the DevEx investment case to a CEO and the next-quarter roadmap to a staff engineer in the same week.

  • People leader and culture carrier. You've built and grown high-performing PM teams, and you raise the bar on retention, performance, and inclusion.

  • Hands-on technical background (software engineering, ML/AI engineering, or DevOps/platform engineering) earlier in career.

Preferred:

  • Experience scaling developer platforms at a consumer marketplace, large-enterprise SaaS, or AI-first company.

  • Direct experience evaluating, rolling out, or building agentic development tools (AI code review, autonomous test/repair, codegen, IDE assistants, agent harnesses).

  • Experience partnering closely with Security, Privacy, and Compliance on developer-tool rollouts in regulated environments (financial services, real estate, healthcare).

  • Track record of measuring developer productivity in credible, non-vanity ways (DORA, SPACE, developer survey + qualitative discovery, NOT lines-of-code).

  • Here at Zillow, we value the experience and perspective of candidates with non-traditional backgrounds. We encourage you to apply if you have transferable skills or related experiences.
