The role involves owning the design and technical integrity of Building Management and Electrical Power Monitoring systems across Nscale's datacenter portfolio. You will author standard sequences of operations and points lists to ensure deterministic and repeatable control behavior across all facilities.
About Nscale
Nscale is the GPU cloud engineered for AI. We provide cost-effective, high-performance infrastructure for AI start-ups and large enterprise customers. Nscale enables AI-focused companies to achieve superior results by reducing the complexity of AI development. Our GPU cloud bolsters technical capabilities and directly supports strategic business outcomes, including cost management, rapid innovation, and environmental responsibility.
We thrive on a culture of relentless innovation, ownership, and accountability, where every team member takes pride in their work and drives it with excellence and urgency. As an Nscaler, you'll build trust through openness and transparency, where everyone is inspired to do their best work. If you join our team, you'll be contributing to building the technology that powers the future.
About the Role
This role owns the design and technical integrity of the Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS), including the PLC-based SCADA architecture built on Ignition, per Nscale's standardized PLC/SCADA control architectures.
You'll operate at the intersection of mechanical engineering, automation, and commissioning, working closely with internal controls engineers, mechanical designers, OEMs, skid manufacturers, system integrators, and field commissioning teams to ensure equipment integrates seamlessly into Nscale's BMS and EPMS environments and supports scalable, repeatable deployments.
You'll author and own Nscale's standard library of control sequences and points lists: a Sequence of Operations (SOO) and a matching points list for every type of mechanical and electrical equipment and system deployed in a North America facility. You'll maintain a governed, versioned, reusable set of sequences and points lists that every project, vendor, and integrator is designed and built to, making control behavior deterministic, comparable, and repeatable across a growing portfolio.
This is a senior individual contributor role that carries design authority. You'll set the standard, hold design consultants, OEMs, and system integrators to it through submittal review, factory testing, and commissioning, and work directly with mechanical, electrical, CSA, construction, commissioning, and Operations teams to make sure what gets built matches what was specified.
What You'll be Doing
- **Standard SOO Library.** Author, own, and maintain the standard Sequence of Operations for every equipment type and system deployed in an Nscale facility, including chilled water plants, CDUs and liquid cooling, chillers, dry coolers, CRAH/CRAC units, air handling and ventilation, pumping systems, humidification, leak detection, generators, UPS, switchgear and ATS, and building-level systems.
- **Standard Points Lists & Data Model.** Own the standard points list, naming, and tagging convention for each equipment type, including per-point attributes such as signal type, units, range, alarm limits, and historian requirements.
- **P&ID Development.** Develop, review, and own P&IDs for mechanical and electrical systems, keeping sequences, points lists, and P&IDs as one coherent, version-controlled design set.
- **BMS & Mechanical Controls Design.** Serve as the primary controls SME for datacenter cooling systems including CDUs, chillers, dry coolers, CRAH/CRAC units, and direct-to-chip liquid cooling skids.
- **EPMS & Electrical Monitoring Design.** Define metering topology, breaker and switchgear status monitoring, power quality capture, and alarm hierarchy across the electrical distribution chain.
- **Vendor, OEM & System Integrator Management.** Define required control interfaces, issue Nscale sequences and points lists as the binding technical basis for vendor scope, and review integrator programming submittals.
- **Risk, Reliability & Commissioning.** Participate in FMEA sessions and design reviews, and own controls scope through HAT, FAT/CAT, SAT, and integrated systems testing.
- **Documentation & Standards.** Ensure BMS, EPMS, and SCADA designs comply with Nscale OT network standards, and drive continuous improvement of controls design standards based on field performance.
About You
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls/Automation Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in industrial controls, building automation, or SCADA engineering, including significant experience in mission-critical or industrial environments (datacenters strongly preferred).
- Demonstrated experience authoring, not merely reviewing, Sequences of Operation and points lists, and building them into reusable standards or libraries.
- Deep experience with PLC-based SCADA systems, including controller architecture, I/O design, program structure, and redundancy.
- Demonstrated experience developing P&IDs for mechanical and/or electrical systems, including instrument and valve tagging and revision control.
- Strong command of integration protocols and industrial networking (Modbus TCP/IP, BACnet/IP, IEC 61850, SNMP).
- Strong understanding of datacenter cooling systems and working knowledge of electrical power monitoring across switchgear, UPS, PDU, and generator equipment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to operate credibly across mechanical, electrical, controls, IT, and operations disciplines.
Nice to Have
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng/PE) license.
- Experience developing controls standards or a sequence library for a multi-site portfolio or hyperscale program.
Why this role matters
A standard library of Sequences of Operation is one of the highest-leverage controls deliverables Nscale can own. It converts control behavior from a per-project negotiation into a specified, reusable standard. Standardized points lists per equipment type are the foundation of every downstream capability, including SCADA development, alarming, trending, analytics, and reporting. Without an internal owner enforcing these standards up front, integration problems appear late in the process and at maximum cost. This role is what keeps control design, vendor equipment, and commissioning aligned as Nscale's datacenter portfolio scales.
