About the Role:
Hello Heart is looking for a Deputy General Counsel, Product to provide pragmatic, strategic, and scalable legal guidance across our product portfolio, including our Food and Drug Administration-cleared heart monitor, mobile app, AI-powered health insights, and AI medication assistant.
Reporting into our General Counsel, you will partner closely with Product, Engineering, Clinical, Data Science, and Compliance teams to navigate complex regulatory requirements, shape product features, and support responsible AI development. You will also help address emerging legal needs as Hello Heart continues to grow.
Responsibilities:
- Advise Product and Engineering teams on legal and regulatory requirements for product features, including Food and Drug Administration compliance and AI and machine learning-driven health insights.
- Provide legal guidance on data privacy, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, corporate practice of medicine, and data rights issues related to product design, data collection, de-identification, and use of health information.
- Support responsible AI governance, including risk assessments, bias testing frameworks, transparency requirements, and internal controls for AI and machine learning in healthcare.
- Partner with the Clinical team on legal issues related to telehealth services, pharmacy review, and health information exchange data.
- Advise on intellectual property strategy, including patent, trade secret, and open-source software matters related to Hello Heart’s technology.
- Monitor relevant industry trends, laws, and regulations, including those related to AI and machine learning in healthcare, Food and Drug Administration requirements, telehealth, Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, digital health intellectual property, and data rights.
- Provide practical legal guidance on emerging product, regulatory, privacy, and healthcare compliance matters as the company scales.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to help teams make sound, compliant, and business-oriented decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications:
- Strong AI fluency, with the ability to use AI tools and agent-based workflows to improve legal research, risk assessment, drafting, process design, and cross-functional execution.
- 15+ years of legal experience in healthcare, digital health, or health technology, with experience leading teams or workstreams focused on product counseling and regulatory compliance.
- Experience advising on product development, regulatory submissions, or technology-related legal matters of varying complexity.
- Experience with Food and Drug Administration-regulated software, Software as a Medical Device, or digital health products strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with AI and machine learning governance frameworks, responsible AI principles, or healthcare AI regulation.
- Significant exposure to regulatory issues in digital health, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Food and Drug Administration software and AI and machine learning regulations, Federal Trade Commission health data enforcement, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requirements for Medicare and Medicaid, and United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General compliance.
- Juris Doctor from an accredited United States law school and active license in good standing with a state bar.
- Growth-minded and able to quickly absorb new information, internalize feedback, and apply sound judgment in evolving regulatory environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, practical guidance in a distributed environment.
- Law firm experience or in-house experience at a health technology or digital health company preferred.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $275,000.00 to $295,000.00. Salary ranges are determined by role and level. Compensation is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
