Build and steward the data governance function, focusing on data quality rules, validation frameworks, and metadata standards. Own the implementation of the data catalogue and map data lineage for reporting and ML pipelines.
We are looking for a Data Governance Analyst to build and steward the data governance function within our Business Intelligence organization. This is an individual contributor role at the manager level — you will own the governance program, not manage a team. The right person is comfortable working across technical and business stakeholders, has strong opinions about data quality and metadata standards, and can translate governance frameworks into practical, adopted process rather than shelf documents.
Our BI team operates in a fast-moving environment with twenty years of historical data, a ClickHouse-based analytical stack, and four data scientists running production ML models. Data governance here is a growth initiative, not a compliance checkbox — you will be shaping something from the ground up.
The successful candidate should be able to travel to Montreal and international offices upon request. The position will include approximately 10% travel for corporate get-togethers and semi-annual planning sessions.
Key Responsibilities
Data Quality & Standards:
- Define and maintain data quality rules, validation frameworks, and acceptable thresholds across analytical and operational data assets
- Establish naming conventions, data definitions, and business glossary standards in collaboration with BI engineers and data scientists
- Monitor data quality metrics and lead triage of identified issues through to resolution
Data Cataloguing & Lineage:
- Own the implementation and ongoing maintenance of a data catalogue, ensuring critical tables and fields are documented and discoverable
- Map and maintain data lineage for key reporting and ML pipelines, with particular attention to player-level and financial data
- Partner with BI engineers to embed lineage documentation into development workflows
Incident Management & Continuous Improvement:
- Triage and manage data integrity incidents, coordinating cross-functional resolution and post-mortem documentation
- Track governance debt and maintain a prioritized backlog of remediation work
- Identify opportunities to automate quality checks and governance workflows
Required Skills and Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in data governance, data quality, or a closely related data management discipline
- Demonstrated ability to build or significantly mature a governance program, not just operate within one
- Hands-on experience with data cataloguing tools (e.g., Alation, Atlan, DataHub, Collibra, or equivalent)
- Strong SQL proficiency; ability to write and interpret data quality queries independently
- Experience authoring governance documentation —data dictionaries, RACI frameworks — that people actually use
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity and working across technical and non-technical audiences
Nice to Have / Preferred
- Familiarity with columnar or OLAP data stores (ClickHouse, BigQuery, Redshift, Snowflake)
- Working knowledge of Python for lightweight automation or data profiling scripts
- Exposure to ML model governance or feature store documentation
What We Offer
- $90,000 CAD base salary
- Fully remote within Canada — hybrid in Montréal or Vancouver for local candidates
- Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision
- Meaningful ownership of a governance function being built from the ground up
- Direct access to an experienced BI leadership team and a technically strong data science group
- Flexible work environment with autonomy to structure your program
