The Data Engineer role offers the opportunity to play a critical part in the stability, performance, and continuous improvement of customer data platforms built on Snowflake, while working in a support environment where operational excellence matters. It provides the chance to combine deep technical problem-solving with practical engineering, supporting business-critical pipelines, improving service reliability, and helping shape better support processes, monitoring, and governance. For someone who enjoys both hands-on data engineering and service ownership, it is an opportunity to become the trusted expert who keeps data flowing, reduces operational risk, and contributes directly to better outcomes for clients and internal teams.
What You'll Do:
Service Operations
- Provide Level 2 and Level 3 support for Snowflake-based data platforms, data pipelines, and integrations in accordance with agreed service levels, support models, and operational procedures.
- Monitor platform availability, warehouse utilisation, job execution, pipeline performance, and data quality controls to identify and address issues proactively before service impact occurs.
- Investigate and resolve incidents, service requests, and data-related issues across ingestion, transformation, storage, semantic, and downstream consumption layers.
- Perform detailed root cause analysis for recurring, complex, or high-impact incidents, and implement permanent fixes to improve service stability and reduce repeat failures.
Participate in on-call, escalation, and major incident support processes where required, ensuring timely communication, impact assessment, and restoration of service.
Platform Support and Enhancement
- Develop, maintain, and support SQL-based transformations, stored logic, pipeline fixes, and minor enhancements required to meet operational and business needs.
- Support scheduled releases, changes, deployments, and post-implementation validation activities in line with change management and release governance processes.
- Assist with the support and optimisation of Snowflake objects and services, including databases, schemas, warehouses, tasks, streams, procedures, and integrations with upstream and downstream platforms.
- Identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency across Snowflake workloads, query execution, and supporting data processes.
Contribute to automation of support activities, including monitoring, alerting, remediation tasks, housekeeping, and repeatable operational procedures.
Security and Governance
- Apply security, access control, governance, and audit requirements in the day-to-day support and operation of Snowflake environments.
- Support the administration of role-based access controls, least-privilege access, and controlled segregation of duties across client environments.
- Assist in implementing and maintaining data protection controls such as masking, row-level access policies, and secure handling of sensitive datasets where required.
- Ensure operational activities comply with client, contractual, and organisational standards for auditability, traceability, and change control.
Contribute to security incident response, investigation, and recovery activities by using audit history, usage data, and operational logs to identify issues and support remediation.
Stakeholder and Service Management
- Work closely with client stakeholders, internal service teams, and delivery teams to prioritise incidents, defects, enhancements, risks, and service improvement opportunities.
Provide clear and timely communication on incident status, problem investigations, service risks, and planned changes to relevant stakeholders.
Documentation and Knowledge Management
- Maintain accurate operational documentation, including support procedures, runbooks, known error records, knowledge articles, and technical support notes.
- Document fixes, workarounds, recurring issue patterns, and platform dependencies to improve support efficiency and knowledge reuse across the support team.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of support standards, monitoring baselines, and operating procedures for Snowflake-managed services.
What We're Looking For:
- Strong hands-on experience supporting Snowflake data platforms, including troubleshooting pipelines, transformations, integrations, and downstream data issues.
- Advanced SQL capability, with the ability to develop, refine, and support data transformations and operational fixes efficiently.
- Solid understanding of data engineering concepts, including ingestion, orchestration, data quality, performance tuning, and platform dependencies.
- Proven incident and problem management skills, with the ability to investigate root causes, implement permanent fixes, and prevent repeat failures.
- Working knowledge of Snowflake security and governance, including access control, least-privilege principles, auditability, and controlled data access.
- Experience supporting releases and changes in a managed services or operational support environment, with disciplined use of change processes.
- Strong monitoring and analytical skills, with the ability to detect service degradation, trend recurring issues, and act proactively.
- Clear stakeholder communication skills, with the ability to prioritise work, manage expectations, and explain technical issues in plain language.
- Well-developed documentation and knowledge management habits, including runbooks, support notes, known errors, and operational procedures.
- A continuous improvement mindset, with the ability to identify automation opportunities, improve supportability, and enhance service reliability over time.
