Creative Digital Content Storytelling Manager

Washington, DC or Remote | Service Employees International Union (SEIU) | Grade D | Salary: $108,104.86

About SEIU
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is a union of about 2 million diverse members working in healthcare, the public sector, and property services. We fight for our Vision for a Just Society: where all workers are valued and all people respected, no matter where we come from or what color we are; where all families and communities can thrive; and where we leave a better and more equitable world for generations to come. We are an anti-racist union determined to check corporate power and uproot structural racism through unions, worker power, collective action, and government, legislative, and political action. We fight for Unions for All and a Government that Works for All so that all of us, across race and place, can have power together in unions and participate fully in our democracy.

The Opportunity
SEIU is seeking a Creative Digital Content Storytelling Manager to help oversee and execute the union's video and digital content creation. This role supports the capture of compelling stories from members and campaigns and develops them into high-quality, engaging video and digital content that advances a unified narrative for the union. Serving as a thought partner and deputy to the Assistant Director of Digital Storytelling, this person will build and hone a content production machine — and the people who power it — for one of the country's largest labor unions.

This is a strong fit for a creative leader who thrives on rapid-response experimentation, wants ownership over a production pipeline, and is motivated by using storytelling to build worker power.

What You'll Do

Content Strategy & Production

  • Oversee your own work and staff's work to build and hone a content production machine for SEIU.
  • Use an editorial calendar, story arc, and unified messaging strategy to develop stories and content that drive the union's narrative forward.
  • Apply message testing results to continually hone and improve content performance.
  • Ensure message discipline by driving a unified narrative across the entire storytelling unit and the union.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Build the skillset and ingenuity of video editors and content creators.
  • Lead staff with an anti-racist lens, fostering a culture of rapid-response experimentation and creative brainstorming.
  • Serve as a thought partner and deputy to the Assistant Director of Digital Storytelling.

Trends, Innovation & Standards

  • Stay abreast of developments in digital content creation trends and how best to apply them in the labor and advocacy space.
  • Ensure the union's creative work is innovative and helps exceed industry standards.

Relationship & Vendor Management

  • Represent the International Union with local leaders, members, staff, and outside organizations, exercising independent judgment and the highest level of professionalism.
  • Interface with SEIU officers, division and region leadership, International senior staff, program managers, and local union officers and staff.
  • Engage external contacts including politicians, government officials, and staff of partner and allied organizations.
  • Manage relationships, budgets, and contracts with vendors: consultants, pollsters, freelancers, video and multimedia producers, and design/production companies and advertising agencies.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of five (5) years of related work experience, or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Experience developing and implementing digital strategies for content amplification.
  • Excellent writing, verbal, visual, and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of narrative best practices and approaches to messaging.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex content creation, including development of video assets.
  • Understanding of what content is likely to perform well in digital spaces, and ability to tailor content to specific outlets, audiences, and platforms.
  • Deep knowledge of video editing and content creation best practices.
  • Strong management skills.
  • Familiarity with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, video and photography equipment, and all major social media platforms.
  • Experience adapting creative work to trends in content consumption.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of unions or other advocacy organizations.
  • Prior experience managing external production vendors, budgets, and contracts.

Beyond credentials, we are looking for someone who:

  • Exercises a high level of judgment and discretion, and can work with extreme independence.
  • Can manage multiple "priority" projects simultaneously, set and meet deadlines, and hold staff teams to the same standard.
  • Navigates complex and sometimes politically sensitive situations with International and local union leaders and senior staff with poise.
  • Maintains the highest level of confidentiality in handling SEIU affairs.
  • Brings genuine creative energy and a collaborative, experimentation-friendly mindset to a team.

Compensation & Location

Work is generally performed in an office setting; job may require work in a variety of other settings to complete assignments. Must be available for frequent travel with overnight stays, and long and irregular hours.

Compensation & Benefits
SEIU offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package that reflects our values as a labor organization and our commitment to the well-being and long-term security of our staff, including:
