The Corporate Jumbo Trainer is responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating training programs for Jumbo Drill Operators across multiple mining projects. This role ensures operators achieve and maintain competency in safe, efficient, and productive jumbo drilling practices while supporting company standards, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The Corporate Jumbo Trainer provides hands-on field coaching, classroom instruction, competency assessments, and mentorship to operators of varying skill levels. The position works closely with site management, supervisors, and health and safety teams to improve operational performance and workforce capability. This is a remote position that will require site travel on a regular basis.

Key Responsibilities

Training & Development
  • Develop and deliver standardized jumbo operator training programs.
  • Conduct classroom, practical, and field-based instruction.
  • Train new hires and existing employees on jumbo drilling equipment, systems, and operating procedures.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to operators to improve performance and productivity.
  • Develop training materials, presentations, assessments, and competency evaluations.
  • Facilitate orientation and refresher training programs.
Competency Assessment
  • Evaluate operator competency through practical demonstrations and observations.
  • Conduct operator assessments and maintain training records.
  • Identify skill gaps and create individualized development plans.
  • Assess operators against company standards and site-specific requirements.
  • Support certification and recertification processes.
Operational Support
  • Work with site supervision to improve drilling practices and operating efficiency.
  • Analyze drilling performance and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Promote best practices in ground support installation, drilling accuracy, and equipment utilization.
  • Assist with implementation of new equipment, technologies, and operating procedures.
  • Participate in incident investigations involving jumbo operations and provide corrective training recommendations.
Safety & Compliance
  • Promote a strong safety culture and lead by example.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, mine regulations, and applicable legislation.
  • Deliver training related to hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe work procedures.
  • Conduct field inspections and audits related to jumbo operations.
  • Support site safety initiatives and continuous improvement programs.
Administration
  • Maintain accurate training records and competency documentation.
  • Prepare reports on training activities, competencies, and workforce development.
  • Track operator qualifications and training compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and site management on workforce development plans.

Qualifications

Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Mining-related trade certification or post-secondary education is considered an asset.
  • Adult education, training, or instructional certification is an asset.
Experience
  • Minimum 8–10 years of underground mining experience.
  • Minimum 5 years operating mechanized jumbo drills in underground mining.
  • Previous experience as a Trainer, Lead Hand, Supervisor, or Mentor preferred.
  • Experience with various jumbo drill manufacturers (Epiroc, Sandvik, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of underground development and production mining methods.

Certifications

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Relevant underground mining certifications required.
  • Train-the-Trainer certification preferred.
  • First Aid certification considered an asset.

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of jumbo drilling operations and ground support installation.
  • Strong understanding of underground mining best practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of mining health and safety regulations.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and motivate employees.
  • Strong problem-solving and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and training documentation systems.
  • Ability to evaluate performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
This position plays a critical role in developing highly skilled jumbo operators while promoting safe, productive, and standardized underground mining practices across all company operations.
