Areas of Focus – Azure Hosting & Administration, AWS Infrastructure, Migration, Cloud Governance
- AWS Infrastructure Operations: Design, maintain, and support secure AWS environments across compute, storage, networking, account structure, and operational practices that complement JerseySTEM’s Azure-hosted services.
- Azure Hosting & Administration: Administer Azure-hosted applications, data services, and supporting infrastructure, including tenant configuration, subscriptions, resource groups, access controls, monitoring, and core service settings.
- Infrastructure as Code: Implement and maintain AWS infrastructure using repeatable, version-controlled practices with tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation to improve consistency, reliability, and speed of deployment.
- Hosting Migration & Platform Integration: Support the migration from legacy hosting environments onto hyper scalers, coordinating application hosting, data warehouse hosting, identity integration, networking, and operational handoff.
- Identity & Access Operations: Oversee practical identity and access controls across Azure and AWS, including role design, permission management, account lifecycle processes, and secure access standards.
- Reliability & Service Continuity: Establish backup, monitoring, logging, and recovery practices across cloud services to support service continuity and operational resilience.
- Cost & Resource Optimization: Monitor Azure subscriptions, licensing, hosted services, and AWS usage to identify waste, improve efficiency, and recommend right-sized solutions aligned to a nonprofit budget.
- Governance & Standards: Define lightweight cloud standards, documentation, and operational guardrails that enable volunteer contributors to manage AWS and Azure responsibly and consistently.
Overview
Membership is a minimum six-month commitment of approximately 6-8 flexible hours per week and includes a $100 refundable deposit, returned after six months of active membership. K–12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students are exempt from the deposit.JerseySTEM is a mission-driven professional network of pro-bono contributors dedicated to improving access to STEM education and career pathways for underserved middle school girls in New Jersey.

Role OverviewReporting to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) or designated technology leader, the Cloud Infrastructure Lead is a high-impact role for an experienced professional who can translate organizational needs into a secure, stable, and well-governed cloud operating model. The role focuses on strengthening JerseySTEM’s Azure hosting, administration, data services, and tenant operations while maintaining AWS as a complementary infrastructure platform for applications, internal systems, and future migration needs.
This role blends hands-on implementation with tactical oversight across Azure administration, AWS infrastructure, migration planning, automation, integrations, and lightweight governance suited to a remote, nonprofit environment.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Requirements
- 8+ years of proven experience in cloud infrastructure, Azure administration, AWS operations, platform engineering, or systems engineering roles.
- Ability to work independently as a “doer”, taking ownership of Azure and AWS initiatives from conception through implementation and ongoing support.
- Strong understanding of Azure hosting, tenant configuration, subscription management, user lifecycle management, and AWS infrastructure concepts including compute, storage, networking, IAM, backup, and recovery.
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code and automation tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or equivalent.
- Experience supporting integrations, identity management, hosting migration, and configuration governance across Azure, AWS, and related cloud services.
- Establish and maintain monitoring, alerting, logging, operational documentation, and support practices to ensure reliable service delivery.
- Partner with JerseySTEM TECH and non-technical stakeholders to prioritize platform and infrastructure improvements aligned with organizational needs.
- Demonstrated ability to optimize cloud subscriptions, licensing, hosted services, and infrastructure usage while recommending cost-effective solutions for a nonprofit organization.
- Excellent communication skills to explain technical decisions, risks, and tradeoffs to both technical and leadership audiences.
- Comfortable working in a fully remote, member-driven organization.
Commitment: Ability to dedicate approximately one working day (6-8 hours) per week to have a tangible impact.
- Relevant certifications are a plus but not required (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect, AWS SysOps Administrator, Azure Administrator, Google Professional Cloud Architect, Terraform Associate).
