Position Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Technologist - Cytogenetics (Remote) performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates laboratory testing procedures and results within the specialty area of cytogenetics. This role analyzes biological specimens using manual and automated methodologies and exercises professional judgment in accordance with established laboratory procedures, regulatory requirements, and applicable professional standards.
This remote position is responsible for performing chromosome analysis and interpretation using Company-approved systems and technologies while maintaining a reliable, wired internet connection and a secure work environment that protects confidential patient information. The incumbent participates in quality assurance activities, supports diagnostic and treatment decisions through accurate laboratory analysis, and provides technical expertise and education to laboratory and healthcare professionals.
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
This position is classified as Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible for overtime compensation in accordance with applicable federal and state laws. Employees in this position are paid for all hours worked and must accurately record all time worked in accordance with Company policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Cytogenetic Analysis and Result Interpretation
- Performs accurate cytogenetic analysis of metaphase cells using automated imaging systems and other approved methodologies.
- Distinguishes between normal and abnormal cytogenetic findings.
- Reviews and correlates current test results with prior patient findings to identify clinically significant changes.
- Applies knowledge of patient diagnoses, clinical history, and testing indications to support accurate result interpretation.
Operational and Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Interprets conventional cytogenetic analyses and collaborates with appropriate laboratory personnel on the assignment of ISCN nomenclature.
- Assists in the review and interpretation of conventional cytogenetic and FISH test results.
- Summarizes findings and prepares case reports for review and sign-out by authorized laboratory leadership, pathologists, and/or laboratory directors.
Reporting and Documentation
- Generates and enters cytogenetic reports into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for review and approval.
- Accurately records test results in worksheets, the LIS, and other required laboratory documentation systems.
- Maintains complete, accurate, and timely clinical, technical, and quality documentation.
- Catalogs and files the slides and records in accordance with laboratory record-retention policies and regulatory requirements.
- Communicates test results and relevant technical information clearly, accurately, and promptly to supervisors, pathologists, and laboratory directors.
Quality, Compliance, and Efficiency
Laboratory Operations and Turnaround Time
- Organizes workload, establishes priorities, and manages assigned cases to meet productivity standards, turnaround times, and laboratory deadlines.
- Maintains high levels of quality, accuracy, and efficiency while meeting established performance expectations.
- Assists with specimen processing and other laboratory activities as needed.
- Identifies technical issues and promptly notify laboratory leadership.
- Performs troubleshooting activities, evaluates corrective actions, and documents findings in accordance with regulatory and laboratory requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Adheres to quality assurance principles, laboratory best practices, and established safety requirements.
- Complies with all Company policies, laboratory procedures, accreditation standards, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Maintains the confidentiality, privacy, and security of protected health information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA and other applicable laws.
- Demonstrates appropriate professional conduct, ethical behavior, communication skills, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Procedures, Validation, and Continuous Improvement
- Maintains familiarity with current standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Assists with the development, implementation, and revision of laboratory procedures as assigned.
- Participates in validation and verification studies for new methodologies, instrumentation, and testing platforms under appropriate supervision.
- Assists with drafting technical documents, competency assessments, and laboratory communications.
- Participates in continuous improvement initiatives designed to enhance quality, efficiency, safety, and operational effectiveness.
- Identifies opportunities for process improvement and communicates recommendations to laboratory leadership.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
The incumbent may:
- Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory personnel within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
- Assist with training and onboarding activities.
- Support laboratory supervisors in coordinating workflow and laboratory processes.
- Promote a professional, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
- Communicate effectively with laboratory personnel and healthcare professionals.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biological sciences, chemical sciences, physical sciences, medical laboratory science, or a closely related field.
- American Society for Clinical Pathology Cytogenetics Certification (ASCP-CG) or eligibility to obtain certification within a timeframe approved by the Company.
- Minimum three (3) years of cytogenetics experience, including chromosome analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Cytogenetics, or a related laboratory discipline.
- Solid tissue cytogenetics experience.
- Prior experience with automated cytogenetic imaging systems.

Remote Work Security and Confidentiality Requirements
The Clinical Laboratory Technologist - Cytogenetics (Remote) is responsible for protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of Company information, patient information, laboratory systems, and electronic records.
Employees must:

HIPAA Breach and Security Incident Reporting Requirements
As part of assigned job duties, the employee may have access to Protected Health Information (PHI), confidential business information, laboratory records, and Company information systems. The employee is responsible for protecting such information and promptly reporting any actual, suspected, or potential privacy or security incident.
In the event of an actual, suspected, or potential privacy breach, security incident, unauthorized disclosure, loss, theft, misuse, or compromise of PHI, confidential information, Company systems, or Company devices, the employee must:
- Immediately take reasonable steps to secure affected information and prevent further unauthorized access or disclosure when safe and appropriate to do so.
- Report the incident immediately upon discovery, but no later than the same business day, to a supervisor, Human Resources, Privacy Officer, Compliance Officer, Information Security representative, or other designated Company representative.
- If discovered outside normal business hours, report the incident as soon as practicable, but no later than the beginning of the next business day.
- Preserve all relevant information and cooperate fully with investigations, audits, risk assessments, corrective actions, and mitigation efforts.
- Refrain from independently contacting patients, external parties, regulators, law enforcement, media representatives, or any other third party unless authorized by the Company.
- Refrain from altering, deleting, destroying, or modifying any records, communications, or electronic information associated with the incident.
- Complete any required incident reports, training, corrective actions, or compliance activities resulting from the investigation.
Examples of reportable incidents include, but are not limited to:
- Unauthorized access to patient information.
- Misdirected emails, reports, or confidential communications.
- Loss or theft of Company-issued devices.
- Sharing passwords or login credentials.
- Suspected malware, ransomware, phishing attacks, or cybersecurity events.
- Unauthorized disclosure of patient, employee, customer, or Company information.
- Remote-work confidentiality breaches.
- Any actual or suspected compromise of PHI, confidential information, or Company systems.
Failure to comply with privacy, security, confidentiality, or reporting requirements may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment, subject to applicable law.
Travel Requirements
This position requires minimal travel. Occasional travel for training, meetings, audits, compliance activities, or other business-related purposes may be required.
