Business Intelligence Analyst

Business Intelligence & Reporting

• Develop, maintain, and improve dashboards, reports, and data visualizations using Power BI or comparable business intelligence tools.
• Bring together data from editorial, peer-review, marketing, sales, finance, and other business systems to provide an integrated view of CSP’s performance and key business indicators.
• Develop and monitor key performance indicators and business trends.
• Prepare routine and ad hoc analyses and reports for teams and organizational leadership.
• Translate complex data and findings into clear, actionable insights for non-technical audiences.

Publishing & Research Analytics

• Conduct analyses related to journal and article performance, including citations and impact, highly cited and uncited content, submissions and rejections, authorbehaviour, subject areas, geography, and other publishing indicators.
• Explore emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, licensing, metadata, and research evaluation.
• Help CSP understand trends across the scholarly publishing landscape, including insights related to our journals, authors, competitors, and broader market position.

Data Quality, Infrastructure & Continuous Improvement

• Support the continued development and effective use of CSP’s data warehouse and reporting environment.
• Work with internal colleagues and, where appropriate, external technical resources on specialized data engineering, infrastructure, or data integration needs.
• Maintain clear documentation and definitions for key metrics, reports, and data sources.
• Monitor data quality, investigate discrepancies, and identify opportunities to improve data consistency and accuracy.
• Look for ways to simplify, streamline, and automate recurring reporting and data collection processes.

Collaboration & Strategic Insight

• Work closely with colleagues across CSP to understand business questions, reporting needs, and strategic priorities.
• Translate business questions into practical analyses, dashboards, and reports.
• Stay informed about developments, trends, data sources, and emerging practices in scholarly publishing and research analytics.

What you'll bring:

• A university degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Information Science, Statistics, Business Analytics, Computer Science, Library or Information Studies, Publishing, or a research-based discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Experience analyzing data, identifying trends, and developing reports or visualizations that support decision-making. Experience may come from business intelligence, analytics, research, publishing, or a related environment.
• Demonstrated proficiency with Power BI or other comparable business intelligence and data visualization platforms, including experience creating dashboards and reports for non-technical audiences.
• Experience with, or a demonstrated interest in, scholarly publishing, academic journals, research evaluation, bibliometrics, meta-science, research communications, or a related field.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data and analytical findings clearly to a variety of audiences.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy, consistency, quality, and responsible handling of information.
• A curious, self-directed, and collaborative approach to learning and problem-solving.
• The ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively across different functional areas.

You don’t need to have every one of these qualifications to be successful in the role. Experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

• Experience working with a scholarly publisher, academic journal, research organization, laboratory, library, or related organization.
• Familiarity with scholarly publishing workflows, including manuscript submission, peer review, publication, citations, licensing, metadata, and journal performance metrics.
• Experience working with bibliometric or research information sources such as OpenAlex, Crossref, Web of Science, Scopus, Dimensions, or similar datasets.
• Experience conducting citation, research impact, or other bibliometric analyses.
• Knowledge of SQL, Python, R, APIs, or other tools used for coding, data extraction, analysis, automation, or working with structured data or meta data.
• Familiarity with data warehouse concepts, ETL/ELT processes, Microsoft Fabric, or other modern data platforms.
• Academic research experience involving quantitative methods, statistics, data analysis, or large datasets.
• Formal education, professional development, or coursework related to scholarly publishing or publishing studies.
• Graduate-level research experience, including a master's degree or PhD in quantitative, research, information science, publishing, or related disciplines.

The anticipated salary range for this position is CAD $80,000 – $90,000. The starting salary will be determined based on the successful candidate’s skills and abilities.
