Responsible for providing integrated support under the supervision of a pharmacist to Optum clinicians and patients by managing refill requests and prior authorizations, conducting therapeutic drug conversions and supporting pharmacy wellness programs.

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5pm PST with rotating Sundays every 4-6 weeks

Location: Remote

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Consistently exhibits behavior and communication skills that demonstrate Optum’s commitment to superior customer service, including quality, care and concern with each internal and external customer
  • Develop proficiencies in utilizing Epic EMR
  • Works with others as part of the team and a member of the Pharmacy Support Center by processing medication refill requests per protocol, facilitating non-protocol refill requests, obtaining prior authorizations and resolving other medication refill related cost issues or problems
    • Enters prescription information into the computer system, including searching for patient records, identifying prescribers, reviewing charts and lab information, choosing medications, interpreting prescriptions, and ensuring accurate documentation within Epic EMR
    • Accurately review and process electronic prescriptions, faxed prescriptions, MyChart renewals, and additional medication related requests per department guidelines and procedures
    • Assists in management of pharmacy department pools, managing open encounters and in-basket messages
    • Responsible for understanding pharmacy benefits, identifying correct insurance, reviewing health plan formularies and processing prior authorizations for medications that are not covered by patient’s insurance
  • Participates in therapeutic drug conversion programs per protocol, documenting drug conversions in the electronic medical record, notifying providers of drug conversions
  • Assists in Pharmacy Quality Initiatives:
    • Medication adherence programs (i.e. reviewing lists, calling pharmacy or patients, etc.)
    • Managing quality lists
    • Documentation
    • Closing administrative gaps
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading professional publications
  • Works independently and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously without review by others
  • Solves routine problems on own; works with supervisor to solve more complex problems
  • Prioritizes and organizes own work to meet department deadlines, productivity metrics, and/or turnaround times
  • Participates in process improvement initiatives and departmental meetings
  • Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives
  • Consistent, dependable, and expected attendance is required
  • Performs additional duties as required or directed by department leads and supervisors
  • Uses, protects, and discloses Optum patients’ protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Current California State Board of Pharmacy Technician license
  • If residing outside of California, must hold an active Pharmacy Technician license in state of residence
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification
  • 1+ years of experience working as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with Windows and Microsoft applications (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with EPIC
  • Prior authorization experience
  • Drug class knowledge

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $16 - $29 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
