WHO WE ARE

Fueled by passion and urgency, the National Kidney Foundation is a lifeline for all people affected by kidney disease. As pioneers of scientific research and innovation, NKF focuses on the whole patient through the lens of kidney health. Relentless in our work, we enhance lives through action, education, and accelerating change.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Associate Managing Editor is a core contributor to the operations of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD), a monthly, peer-reviewed clinical journal. Reporting directly to the Managing Editor and working closely with the journal editors, this position plays a vital role in ensuring the integrity, timeliness, and quality of the editorial and production processes. The Associate Managing Editor collaborates with the editorial office and publisher to uphold journal policies and align digital and print production with industry best practices.

In addition to managing key aspects of the peer-review workflow, this role is responsible for ensuring that all accepted manuscripts meet journal style guidelines and comply with editorial policies. The Associate Managing Editor also supports the development and implementation of strategies to improve workflow efficiency and the author and reviewer experience.

  • Draft detailed decision letters for revised manuscript invitations that synthesize editors’ comments, peer reviewer feedback, and journal policy/style requirements.
  • Communicate with editors to resolve inconsistencies or concerns related to editorial decisions or publication ethics.
  • Serve as liaison between authors and editors on revision-related questions and clarification of editorial requests.
  • Conduct pre-acceptance compliance checks to ensure manuscripts meet journal policies and style, including verification of figures, copyright permissions, and required documentation—coordinating with team members as needed.
  • Upon acceptance, transmit final content to the publisher accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Perform quality control of copyediting and typesetting by reviewing article proofs and working with the Journal Manager at Elsevier to address errors and improve production workflows.
  • Respond to author and reader inquiries post-publication and coordinate corrections or updates to published content with the publisher.
  • Maintain and update manuscript handling procedures and templates in response to system changes, workflow improvements, or editorial requests—both within and outside of Editorial Manager.
  • Troubleshoot Editorial Manager issues and coordinate with the vendor to resolve technical problems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency of the peer review process by compiling and analyzing performance metrics related to manuscript flow, reviewer turnaround, and editorial activity.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to promote journal content through social media, press releases, newsletters, and other media and organizational channels.
  • Generate custom reports as requested by editors and monitor industry trends that may enhance editorial efficiency or decision speed.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled editorial and publisher conference calls; take meeting notes and execute assigned follow-up actions.
  • Assist with special projects as requested by the Managing Editor, including journal supplements, visual abstract editing, NephMadness coordination, internship programming, and staff vacation coverage.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU’LL POSSESS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with 5-7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in STM publishing.
  • Proficient with online peer review tracking system and familiarity with creating and running reports.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills and superior project management, problem-solving, and computer literacy skills.
  • Must have ability to work independently, maintain scrupulous attention to detail throughout complicated and prolonged workflows, handle confidential information appropriately, and keep up to date on evolving standards in the ethics of scholarly publishing.
