AI Summary

Lead accessibility initiatives across digital products by integrating scalable workflows into the product lifecycle. Conduct audits, manage accessibility documentation like VPATs, and provide role-based training to cross-functional teams.

ITHAKA’s mission is to expand access to knowledge and education around the world. Our services — JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R — enable people everywhere to learn, to grow, and to overcome barriers to education. In carrying out our mission, as employees we feel a deep responsibility to members of our community and to each other, and we are committed to building and sustaining a culture where everyone can thrive.

The Role

ITHAKA is seeking an Accessibility Lead to join the Product Design team and lead accessibility work across our digital products and related experiences. This role is best suited to an experienced accessibility leader who can combine hands-on expertise in audits, testing, documentation, and remediation with strong cross-functional judgment, scalable process improvement, and practical guidance for teams across the product lifecycle.

Reporting to the Director of Product Design, this person will work closely with Product, Design, Engineering, QA, Research, Support, Participant Experience, Content Operations, Legal, and other stakeholders to strengthen accessibility practices across planning, discovery, design review, development, testing, release readiness, documentation, and ongoing maintenance. This is not a people-management role, but it does require leading through influence across teams, mentoring the work of others on accessibility-related efforts, and helping teams build more sustainable accessibility practices over time.

Responsibilities

Accessibility leadership and lifecycle integration

  • Lead accessibility work across multiple products or functional areas, with responsibility for improving how accessibility is incorporated across the product lifecycle.
  • Shape scalable workflows for accessibility in planning, discovery, design review, development, testing, release readiness, and post-release follow-through.
  • Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering to ensure accessibility requirements are clear, actionable, and incorporated into roadmaps, stories, patterns, and release planning.
  • Help teams prioritize accessibility work based on user impact, organizational risk, feasibility, and long-term maintainability.

Auditing, documentation, and issue follow-through

  • Lead audits and evaluations of digital products, interfaces, workflows, and supporting documentation using manual, automated, and assistive-technology testing methods.
  • Establish and refine scalable approaches to VPATs, ACRs, and related documentation across products.
  • Collaborate with engineers and product teams to identify, document, reproduce, prioritize, and track accessibility issues; support clearer defect management by helping define severity, ownership, backlog routing, and validation expectations.
  • Ensure that public-facing accessibility language is accurate, specific, and reviewed appropriately with Legal when needed.

Enablement, standards, and organizational effectiveness

  • Create and deliver role-based training, guidance, and practical resources for designers, engineers, product managers, researchers, content teams, and adjacent partners.
  • Help teams adopt scalable accessibility practices, including reusable patterns, acceptance criteria, automated checks, shared templates, and reference materials.
  • Lead cross-functional content remediation efforts in partnership with product managers and other stakeholders, helping define priorities, coordinate execution, and improve repeatable remediation workflows.
  • Provide guidance for content accessibility, public documentation, support responses, and contributor-facing workflows where accessibility expectations need to be clearer.
  • Advise leadership and cross-functional partners on accessibility risk, prioritization, and opportunities to improve how accessibility work is coordinated and sustained.

Experience and Skills

  • 5+ years of professional experience in digital accessibility or closely related digital product disciplines.
  • Deep knowledge of WCAG, accessibility testing practices, and accessibility requirements in modern digital product environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of assistive technologies and of how accessible solutions are implemented and validated in practice.
  • Experience creating or maintaining accessibility documentation, including ACRs or VPATs.
  • Experience working closely with Product, Design, and Engineering in agile or iterative product environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders across different functions and levels of the organization.
  • Comfort moving between strategic planning and hands-on execution.
  • IAAP certification or similar credentials are a plus, but not required.
