WBG Pioneers, the World Bank Group’s Internship Program, offers undergraduate and postgraduate students a high impact learning experience at the heart of global development. Participants gain hands on experience in a diverse and dynamic environment, contribute fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, and connect with international professionals working to end poverty on a livable planet.

A department of the World Bank's Development Economics Vice-Presidency (DEC), DEC Development Impact's (DECDI) purpose is to increase the use of impact evaluation in the design and implementation of public policy and to develop institutional capacity and motivation for evidence-based policy. The DECDI Analytics team seeks to recruit interns to support the World Bank Reproducible Research Initiative. 

The World Bank Reproducible Research Initiative is dedicated to enhancing transparency and rigor in empirical research. Over the past two years, our team has published nearly 300 reproducibility packages for World Bank papers and reports in the World Bank Reproducible Research Repository. Building on this success, we have recently expanded our mandate to include papers from the Policy Research Working Paper (PRWP) series. 

The intern will assist in the reproducibility verification of working papers published in the PRWP series and in verifying that reproducibility packages published in the World Bank’s Reproducible Research Repository are operational. Our initiative provides interns with a unique opportunity to contribute to global research standards and gain hands-on experience in research verification processes. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Interns will report to junior data scientists and analysts within the DECDI Analytics team. Key responsibilities include: 
  • Verifying the stability of results in reproducibility packages analyzed from the PRWP series 
  • Checking the reproducibility of exhibits in working papers from the PRWP series 
  • Reviewing reproducibility packages posted in the World Bank’s Reproducible Research Repository and flagging incomplete packages or inconsistent metadata

Selection Criteria

  • General data literacy and strong attention to detail 
  • Familiarity with the structure of empirical economics papers 
  • Willingness to learn LaTeX (used for review reports; guidance provided) 
  • Knowledge of Stata or R is preferred but not required; no prior programming experience is necessary 
  • Commitment of 15-20 hours per week 
  • The internship can be performed remotely or in Washington DC 
  • Desired dates: Flexible dates, depending on the candidate’s availability will be considered. 
The internship is unpaid and requires an academic letter of support confirming that the student will meet academic requirements for at least one term/semester upon satisfactory completion of the internship. The internship may be extended beyond the initial term upon satisfactory performance and the issuance of an additional letter of support from the intern's academic institution. 

No-Fee Internship Eligibility

This position is offered under the WBG Pioneers No-Fee Internship Track. Students may be offered a no-fee STT appointment provided that they either: (a) are enrolled in a Master's, PhD, or similar graduate program during the entire internship (or are in the fifth year or higher of a degree program in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages) and provide an official letter from their university confirming that the internship fulfills academic requirements for at least one term of study; or (b) are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies and receive a stipend from their university at least equivalent to the minimum STT T1 fee level in effect at the start of the assignment, as confirmed by an official university letter.
