Project – the aim you’ll have

We are seeking an experienced PostgreSQL Database Administrator (DBA) to join our Data Platforms team. This role is responsible for the PostgreSQL database platform, with a particular focus on Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server, supporting critical production systems within a highly regulated financial services environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration, optimisation, security, availability, and ongoing lifecycle management of enterprise PostgreSQL environments. The role supports mission-critical business applications, cloud deployments, and development teams delivering strategic technology solutions.

Role – how you’ll contribute

• Administer and support PostgreSQL database environments, primarily Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server.
• Ensure high availability, resilience, performance, and security of production PostgreSQL systems.
• Perform backup and recovery, point-in-time restore, patching, upgrades, performance tuning, capacity management, and maintenance activities.
• Configure and optimise PostgreSQL technologies and features including MVCC, VACUUM/autovacuum, WAL, replication, indexing, statistics, roles and privileges, and extensions.
• Design and support Azure PostgreSQL capabilities including high availability, read replicas, private networking, backup and disaster recovery.
• Support PostgreSQL security controls, authentication, TLS, least-privilege access, auditing, and integration with Microsoft Entra ID where appropriate.
• Monitor and troubleshoot query performance, locking, long-running transactions, connection utilisation, replication lag, storage, and database health.
• Support connection management and pooling solutions such as PgBouncer.
• Participate in cloud transformation and database migration initiatives, including migration of workloads to PostgreSQL.
• Support Database DevOps, infrastructure automation, CI/CD pipelines, Git, and Azure DevOps.
• Participate in incident, problem, and change management processes.
• Maintain operational documentation, standards, runbooks, and support project onboarding activities.
• Provide PostgreSQL technical leadership, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to other database professionals.
• Participate in on-call rota and out-of-hours support where required.

Qualifications

Expectations – the experience you need

• 5+ years’ experience administering PostgreSQL environments, including mission-critical production systems.
• Strong PostgreSQL administration, performance tuning, and troubleshooting experience.
• Experience with PostgreSQL internals including MVCC, VACUUM/autovacuum, WAL, query planning, statistics, indexing, locking, and transaction management.
• Experience designing and operating highly available and resilient PostgreSQL environments.
• Experience with backup, point-in-time recovery, replication, disaster recovery, patching, and major-version upgrades.
• Experience with Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server or equivalent enterprise managed PostgreSQL services.
• Experience with Azure networking and security concepts relevant to managed databases, including private connectivity, DNS, identity, and access control.
• Experience managing PostgreSQL roles, privileges, authentication, extensions, and security configuration.
• Strong SQL skills and experience diagnosing and optimising complex queries.
• Linux administration and shell scripting skills.
• Experience with automation and Infrastructure as Code in cloud environments.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
• Experience operating within formal incident and change management frameworks.

Additional skills – the edge you have

• Deep experience with Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server in enterprise production environments.
• Experience with PostgreSQL migration and assessment tooling, including migrations from Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server.
• Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server administration experience.
• Experience with PgBouncer and application connection-pooling patterns.
• Knowledge of PostgreSQL observability tooling and Azure Monitor integration.
• Terraform experience for automated database provisioning.
• Experience integrating PostgreSQL with data platforms such as Microsoft Fabric or Snowflake.
• Experience establishing PostgreSQL engineering standards, operational runbooks, and production-readiness controls.
• Financial services or investment management sector experience.
