Title: Vice President, Software Quality Engineering
Standard Hours: 40
Primary Location: Home Office
Reports to: Chief Information Officer (CIO)
Job Description:
The Vice President, Software Quality Engineering leads Student Choice’s software quality assurance function and owns the standards, tooling, and metrics by which software quality is measured. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), this role directs an automated, AI-enabled, metrics-driven quality discipline: automated regression suites cover the supported application portfolio, quality performance is reported to leadership on a defined cadence, and every release passes through a defined quality gate before sign-off. The VP, Software Quality Engineering supervises the Software Quality team, owns the department’s testing tools and vendor relationships, and partners closely with Software Engineering leadership to sustain development velocity without compromising quality.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Own the strategy, standards, and operating model for the Software Quality function, including the testing requirements that apply at each stage of the software development lifecycle
• Direct the operation and upkeep of the automated regression testing framework, ensuring test suites remain current, reliable, and aligned to release scope
• Govern the use of AI-assisted testing tools for test case generation, script maintenance, and coverage analysis, including the standards for reviewing and validating AI-generated tests
• Maintain and publish the department’s quality metrics — automation coverage, testing cycle time, defect trends, and bug escape rate — on a defined reporting cadence
• Serve as the quality gate for software releases, issuing go/no-go recommendations and holding development accountable to defined quality standards prior to sign-off
• Coordinate test planning and execution with Software Engineering leadership so that testing fits within release schedules and code-freeze windows
• Engage development teams early in the lifecycle through requirements review, test design, and defect-prevention practices so quality issues surface before release
• Supervise, coach, and develop the Software Quality team, including work assignment, performance management, and skills development in automation and AI-assisted testing
• Own the QA tool portfolio, including evaluation, selection, renewal, and management of testing platforms and vendor relationships
• Maintain the department’s testing documentation, including test strategy, entry and exit criteria, environment requirements, and test data standards
• Partner with the CIO on hiring, budget, resource planning, and departmental priorities for the Software Quality function
• Report QA performance, initiatives, risks, and outcomes to the CIO and executive leadership
Position Requirements:
• Proven experience in software quality assurance leadership (10 years+), including experience building or scaling automated regression testing programs
• Demonstrated success integrating AI-assisted tools with QA automation frameworks to build and maintain test scripts
• Strong analytical mindset, with experience establishing and reporting on QA metrics such as automation coverage, cycle time, and defect/bug escape rates
• Experience partnering with software engineering and development leadership to improve release velocity and quality outcomes
• Excellent leadership, coaching, and team development skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present QA performance and strategy to executive leadership
• Strong understanding of departmental budgets and resource planning
• Ability to self-motivate and organize a dynamic list of priorities while meeting deadlines
• Ability to work effectively from a remote location
• Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all business and client information
Work Conditions:
• Sitting for extended periods of time
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices and objects
• Physically able to participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings
• Travel may be required for the purpose of tool and vendor evaluation, training, and meetings with development and executive leadership
