Virtual Math & Science Tutor

Job Overview:

Northwest Education Access (NWEdA) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Independent tutor to provide one-on-one virtual tutoring and coaching services to NWEdA  students aged 16-29. The role will focus primarily on providing high level math and science tutoring support to students as needed, based on student requests. Tutors may also provide other tutoring subject area requests such as English, resumes, GED support, placement tests, or the subject expertise of the tutor. 

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in tutoring, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with staff and volunteers to ensure the best possible support for students. This position is fully remote, and the contractor will manage their schedule in coordination with NWEdA supervisors.

Northwest Education Access works throughout the greater Puget Sound region on Coast Salish land. We provide comprehensive and individualized support to help low-income young people, ages 16-29, build their own path to higher education and beyond. Northwest Education Access focuses specifically on supporting alternative routes to high school completion and the transition into post-secondary pathways. The young people we serve navigate complex education barriers that are compounded by inequitable access to basic needs such as housing, mental health services, and childcare. They do this while experiencing institutional racism and surviving generational and historical trauma. Many of the young people we serve are considered ‘Opportunity Youth,’ meaning they are typically disconnected from school and/or work. Despite a range of backgrounds, our students all share a strong motivation to complete their education and demonstrate resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. 

The Northwest Education Access program model is based on having a team of Education Advocates located at partner sites throughout the community. Partner sites include community or technical colleges, Open Doors programs, youth-serving homeless shelters, and other service providers working with low-income youth. Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one virtual tutoring and coaching to NWEdA-enrolled students in high school- and college-level math and science, with occasional support in other subject areas based on expertise (e.g., English, GED, placement tests, or resume support).
• Serve students on an as-needed basis and maintain regular communication with NWEdA staff regarding scheduling and student progress.
• Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and other tutors to support student success.
• Attend required onboarding, training, and supervision meetings.

Qualifications

Required

• Experience tutoring or coaching students in advanced math and science.
• Proficiency in Calculus (minimum high school level) and college-level Chemistry and Biology.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently in a virtual environment.

Preferred

• Teaching credentials and/or extensive tutoring experience with high school students or young adults.
• Flexibility to tutor additional subjects and/or provide test preparation (e.g., English, GED, placement tests, resume support).
• Experience supporting students from historically underrepresented communities and students with diverse learning needs, including English Language Learners, students with IEPs, and neurodivergent learners.
• Understanding of educational inequities and barriers to higher education.
• Experience using virtual meeting and scheduling platforms.
• Ability to provide occasional in-person tutoring within King, Pierce, or Snohomish counties, if requested.

Hours

• This is an as-needed independent contractor position with variable hours based on student demand.
• There is no guaranteed minimum number of hours. Contractors generally work no more than 25 hours per month, subject to program needs and available funding.
• Tutoring services are generally not offered during the month of July or the second half of December.

Independent Contractor Requirements

• Provide your own computer, reliable internet, phone, and virtual meeting platform.
• Submit a completed W-9 and monthly invoices.
• Be responsible for your own taxes as an independent contractor.
• Maintain personal transportation and insurance if in-person tutoring is requested.

Compensation & Hours:

• Rate: $45 per hour.
• Student Cancellations & No-Shows: No compensation will be provided if a student cancels at least 24 hours before a scheduled session. For cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice or student no-shows, the Contractor will receive a $20 cancellation fee.
• Contractor Cancellations & No-Shows: Contractors are expected to provide at least 24 hours' notice when canceling a session. Contractors who cancel with less than 24 hours' notice or fail to attend a scheduled session without notice will not be compensated. Repeated late cancellations or no-shows may result in termination of this Agreement.
• Hours: Contractor’s hours will vary based on as needed basis with the following limitations: Will not surpass 25 hours per month unless unused hours are reallocated by NWEdA. Will not surpass 40 hours collectively with other contractors during summer quarter and will not surpass 120 hours collectively with other contractors per quarter for Fall, Winter, and Spring. The designated supervisor is responsible for tracking collective contract tutor hours and keeping the contractor informed. Reallocation of unused hours will be at the discretion of NWEdA.
