The Underwriting Counsel provides high-level support and risk evaluation for real estate transactions across the Western Region. They are responsible for building agent partnerships, drafting policy language, and delivering educational content to ensure regulatory compliance.

Job Summary:

The Western Region Underwriting Counsel provides high-level underwriting support, counsel, and authorization to company personnel, independent agents, and customers regarding real estate closings and title insurance matters across the Western Region with a focus on Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. This role evaluates risk factors, determines the company's willingness and ability to insure real estate transactions, and issues underwriting standards and guidelines within delegated authority limits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Underwriting Support & Guidance: Review and evaluate title searches, complex real estate transactions, and insurance risk factors for properties in CO, UT, and NV. Determine acceptability of risk and provide decisive, clear underwriting solutions.
  • Agent & Customer Partnership: Build and maintain lifelong relationships with independent title agents and customers, providing personalized attention and support to help their businesses thrive.
  • Risk Management: Draft tailored language, exceptions, and endorsements in title commitments and policies to protect the company's interests while supporting agent needs.
  • Education & Communication: Create and deliver relevant educational content, training seminars, or webinars regarding title insurance rates, rules, and best practices for the region.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with underwriting teams, claims counsel, and sales leadership to ensure alignment with company goals and state-specific regulatory compliance.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • Strong familiarity with real estate law, title insurance rules, and statutory regulations specific to the Western Region (CO, UT, and NV).
  • Exceptional analytical, abstract thinking, and creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with a passion for agent education and customer service.
  • This is a remote, largely autonomous role. The underwriter is the primary point of contact for a growing portfolio of title agents spread across the Western Region, working largely unsupervised day to day. This requires a candidate who can independently prioritize agent needs and manage underwriting risk decisions in real time with limited direction from the central office.

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an ABA-approved law school.
  • Licensed attorney in good standing, with admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction (familiarity or licensure in CO, UT, or NV preferred).
  • 5 to 10+ years of title insurance underwriting or closely related real estate legal experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional Travel is expected.
