The Transportation Planning Technician will process mobility data, prepare calculation worksheets, and produce technical reports using specialized software. They will also create cartographic figures and diagrams while collaborating with engineering teams to ensure project deliverables meet quality standards.
Transportation Planning Technician
Key Responsibilities
Calculations and Data Processing
Prepare calculation worksheets in Excel using the team’s templates and methodologies.
Process and present large volumes of mobility data in a concise manner through graphs and tables, including traffic counts, origin-destination surveys, speed and flow data, and ridership data.
Structure, validate, and clean datasets received from clients and data collection firms before analysis.
Produce tables and charts presenting results for reports and client presentations.
Traffic Simulation and Modeling
Prepare calculation files in specialized traffic software such as Synchro, Aimsun, and Vissim, including network coding, import of speed and flow data, and traffic signal timing configuration.
Perform vehicle turning simulations using AutoTURN and prepare supporting figures.
Conduct consistency checks and basic quality control reviews on modeling files before submission to the responsible engineer.
Document assumptions, versions, and data sources to ensure analysis traceability.
Graphic and Cartographic Production
Produce plans and conceptual diagrams representing planning and design concepts.
Create figures and maps illustrating mobility concepts, including networks, routes, flows, typical sections, service areas, and phasing.
Contribute to the development of standardized graphic templates (maps, figures, and tables) for reuse in reports.
Monitor and ensure consistency of the visual identity across all graphic deliverables.
Support the production of visual materials for proposals and public presentations.
Collaboration
Participate in project kick-off and progress meetings with Quebec teams.
Quickly integrate review comments from engineers and project managers.
Propose improvements to templates, workflows, and graphic libraries to improve production efficiency.
Desired Profile
College diploma or university degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Transportation, Urban Planning, Geography, Geomatics, Urban Design, or any other relevant field.

Versatile technical resource, comfortable with both quantitative data processing and graphic production.
Strong ability to self-learn software applications, which is a critical requirement given the diversity of tools used.
Self-motivated, rigorous, and detail-oriented.
Fluency in French, both spoken and written, is an essential requirement and a screening criterion. The incumbent collaborates daily with Quebec teams and produces figures, tables, and annotations in French.
Functional English is an asset for communication with other WSP offices.
Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and deliver within established deadlines.
Knowledge of at least one of these tools is considered a strong asset; internal training will be provided for the others.
Graphic Design
Adobe Illustrator.
Adobe Photoshop.
Adobe InDesign.
Mapping
QGIS.
ArcGIS.
Collaboration Tools
Microsoft 365 Suite:
SharePoint
Teams
Additional Assets
Data processing or automation skills using Power Query, Python, or VBA.
Comfort with generative AI tools (Microsoft 365 Copilot or equivalent) to accelerate data processing, formatting, creation of initial graphic drafts, and document summarization.
Ability to critically validate AI-generated content to ensure calculation and data accuracy, technical consistency, and compliance with WSP visual identity standards.
Compliance with WSP internal guidelines regarding responsible AI use and client data confidentiality.
