Join the team at Freedom Technology Solutions Group and take the next step in your career! This position supports an established prime contract and offers telecommuting and flexible scheduling supporting a mission focused program.
Freedom Technology Solutions Group is seeking a Technical Writer to join our technical team. We are looking for someone who is, first and foremost, a strong technical writer—not simply an editor. The successful candidate will work directly with software engineers, systems engineers, DevOps personnel, testers, and other technical SMEs to understand systems and independently develop clear, accurate, and usable technical documentation.
This role requires someone who can take technical discussions, demonstrations, engineering artifacts, and existing source material and turn them into well-structured documentation from the ground up. You should be comfortable asking the right questions, learning complex technologies quickly, and translating highly technical information into content appropriate for a variety of audiences.
Responsibilities
- Author, review, revise, and maintain technical documentation supporting software development, systems engineering, system operations, testing, deployment, and end-user activities
- Develop new technical content from source material, engineering discussions, demonstrations, and SME interviews rather than primarily editing existing documentation
- Work closely with software developers, systems engineers, DevOps engineers, testers, and other technical SMEs to gain an in-depth understanding of systems, products, workflows, and documentation requirements
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and easy-to-understand documentation for technical and non-technical audiences
- Create and maintain documentation across multiple environments and networks
- Produce high-quality documentation that meets applicable standards and is appropriate for its intended audience
- Develop user guides, system documentation, operational procedures, troubleshooting guides, online help, developer documentation, and other technical content
- Create tutorials, procedures, and step-by-step instructions that enable end users to effectively use applications and systems
- Organize technical information into logical, consistent, and maintainable documentation sets
- Identify documentation gaps and proactively work with technical teams to develop the required content
- Create or incorporate diagrams, screenshots, workflows, and other visuals that improve understanding of technical concepts
- Maintain documentation as systems, software, processes, and requirements evolve
Required Qualifications
- Active Top Secret/SCI with Polygraph
- Associate's degree in a technical discipline from an accredited college or university. Two (2) years of additional technical writing experience may be substituted for an associate's degree
- Two (2) years of experience supporting programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity within the Federal Government
- Demonstrated experience authoring technical documentation, particularly for software, systems, or other complex technical environments
- Strong technical writing skills with the ability to independently develop documentation from technical source material and SME input
- Experience writing documentation and procedure manuals for multiple audiences
- Experience working directly with engineers and other technical SMEs to gather information and develop documentation
- Ability to understand complex technical subject matter and translate it into clear, organized, and actionable content
- Experience developing user-focused documentation that improves usability and overall user experience
- Ability to create or work with technical visuals, diagrams, screenshots, and workflows
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize multiple simultaneous deadlines and manage multiple documentation efforts
- Proven ability to quickly learn new technologies, applications, and technical concepts
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
Desired Qualifications
- Understanding of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
- Experience documenting Agile software development or DevSecOps environments
- Familiarity with software development, cloud, infrastructure, or enterprise IT environments
- Experience working in Confluence or similar collaborative documentation platforms
- Experience creating system administration, deployment, troubleshooting, or operational documentation
- Experience supporting technical teams within the Intelligence Community or other Federal Government environments
This is an excellent opportunity for a technical writer who enjoys creating content, learning technology, and working directly with engineers. If you are someone who can take complex technical information and turn it into documentation that people can actually understand and use, we want to hear from you.
