The Opportunity:
Unity Environmental University Career Edge seeks enthusiastic and experienced individuals to serve as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support the development of undergraduate courses within our Entrepreneurship curriculum. These courses are part of Unity’s innovative, workforce-aligned academic model and are delivered in five-week terms as asynchronous, online courses designed for diverse learners.
SMEs will collaborate closely with an academic dean and a learning experience designer to shape course content, learning activities, and assessments that are engaging, applied, and accessible to undergraduate learners.
Course to Be Developed
ENTR 2040: Small Business Formation and Operations
This course equips students with the practical skills and legal knowledge needed to establish and operate a small business. Topics include business structures, registration, taxation, licensing, insurance, and basic operations management.
Students will:
· Compare legal forms of business and select appropriate structures.
· Complete required documentation for business formation and compliance.
· Develop an operations plan for day-to-day business functions.
· Analyze basic legal and financial risks in business planning.
Role Responsibilities
Select and/or design content that supports student mastery of small business formation, legal compliance, and business operations
Translate real-world entrepreneurial and small business practices into accessible, student-facing instructional materials
Develop applied assignments involving business formation, registration, licensing, taxation, operations planning, and risk management
Collaborate with academic leadership and learning designers in an iterative development process
Ensure content reflects current business regulations, legal requirements, and industry best practices
Incorporate ethical decision-making, legal compliance, and sound business management principles throughout the course
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
Advanced degree in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Management, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a closely related field
Professional experience starting, managing, advising, or supporting small businesses or entrepreneurial ventures
Strong understanding of business structures, business registration, licensing, taxation, insurance, and day-to-day business operations
Familiarity with legal and regulatory requirements affecting small businesses
Ability to explain business, legal, and operational concepts clearly for undergraduate learners
Strong written communication skills, including the ability to create clear, student-facing instructions
Ability to meet deadlines and work collaboratively in a remote environment
Proficiency with standard computer applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel) and familiarity with modern productivity tools
Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching, training, or mentoring adult or undergraduate learners
Background in online or distance education
Experience as a small business owner, entrepreneur, business consultant, or advisor
Familiarity with business planning, operations management, financial planning, or regulatory compliance for small businesses
Knowledge of current small business technologies, including accounting, point-of-sale, scheduling, inventory, or customer relationship management (CRM) systems
Personal commitment to sustainability, workforce development, and Unity’s environmental mission
