In this role, you will be instrumental in owning the design, development, and long-term evolution of our flagship CMS platform, enabling businesses to create and deliver seamless digital content experiences. You will work closely with product owners, designers, and fellow developers to drive technical direction and execution of scalable server-side solutions, ensuring high performance, reliability, and security.

Experience across multiple backend languages and frameworks, with a strong focus on Ruby on Rails (our primary backend framework), is highly regarded, as is experience in Python, Node.js, or similar. Exposure to AI-driven features, modern databases, or data-intensive workflows is also a plus.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Own and drive the next generation of Storyblok’s customer-facing products and features by building scalable and reliable backend systems using modern technologies (primarily Ruby on Rails, additional experience in other programming languages, like Python, Rust, or Elixir valued).
• Take responsibility for the performance and scalability of our APIs, optimizing queries and data models with PostgreSQL and other storage systems.
• Design and implement data workflows that may involve relational, NoSQL, or vector databases depending on project needs.
• Collaborate on integrating AI-driven features and services, ensuring production readiness, scalability, and maintainability.
• Implement automated testing as part of development workflows and continuously raise the bar for performance, security, and reliability.
• Develop a thorough understanding of our codebase and domain, actively shape technical standards, share knowledge proactively with colleagues, and contribute to documentation.
• Proactively address bugs and production issues for our customers, demonstrating strong ownership and balancing speed with quality.
• Work closely with product owners, designers, and other stakeholders to understand and translate business requirements into well-structured, sustainable technical solutions.
• Actively participate in thoughtful code reviews and provide technical guidance and mentorship to more junior engineers in an open, respectful, and empathetic manner.
• Act as a strong team player, taking initiative to unblock work, helping teammates overcome obstacles, resolve blockers, and complete work tasks.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• 7+ years of relevant experience as a Backend Engineer, with at least 3+ years in Ruby on Rails preferred.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong experience with at least one major backend framework (e.g., Ruby on Rails preferred; FastAPI, Flask, or Express is a plus).
• Experience with PostgreSQL; familiarity with NoSQL or vector databases (e.g., Qdrant, Pinecone, or Weaviate) is a plus.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks (e.g., RSpec, PyTest, Jest) and CI/CD best practices.
• Solid understanding of design patterns, development best practices, object-oriented design, algorithms, and data structures.
• Knowledge of tools such as Redis, Sidekiq, Memcached, or equivalents.
• Experience with RESTful services and microservices; exposure to GraphQL is a plus.
• Proficiency with Git and modern development workflows.
• Experience with cloud-based infrastructure (AWS preferred; GCP or Azure a plus).
• Familiarity with modern AI/ML services or data-intensive workflows is desirable.
• Ability to write efficient, secure, well-documented, and clean code.
• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in a collaborative, remote-first environment.
