Job Title: Steel Estimator (with Pricing)
30-40 HOURS PER WEEK
VA RATE : $12-14 AUD per hour (negotiable)
Job Summary
The Steel Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate material take-offs, cost estimates, and pricing for structural and miscellaneous steel projects. This role supports sales, project management, and fabrication teams by providing competitive and profitable pricing aligned with project specifications and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Take-Offs
• Review construction drawings, specifications, and tender documents
• Perform detailed quantity take-offs for structural and miscellaneous steel (beams, columns, plates, stairs, handrails, etc.)
• Identify scope inclusions, exclusions, and potential risks
• Clarify discrepancies in drawings and specifications
Pricing & Costing
• Prepare accurate pricing for materials, fabrication, labor, coatings, transport, and erection
• Obtain and analyze supplier and subcontractor quotes
• Apply labor rates, overheads, margins, and contingency allowances
• Develop competitive bid pricing while maintaining profitability
• Update and maintain pricing databases and rate libraries
Tender & Proposal Support
• Prepare detailed estimates, summaries, and tender submissions
• Assist in value engineering and alternative pricing options
• Support negotiations and post-tender clarifications
• Coordinate with sales, engineers, and project managers
Documentation & Reporting
• Produce estimate breakdowns, BOQs, and pricing schedules
• Maintain accurate estimating records for audit and reference
• Track historical project costs to improve future estimates
Compliance & Standards
• Ensure estimates comply with relevant building codes, project specifications, and client
requirements
• Follow company estimating procedures and quality standards
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Proven experience as a Steel Estimator or Construction Estimator. Minimum of 5-8 years.
• Strong knowledge of structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication
• Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Tekla, AutoDesk, or similar)
• Advanced Excel skills for pricing and cost analysis
• Ability to read and interpret Architectural / structural drawings
• Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
• Excellent communication and time management skills
