POSITION SUMMARY

CVS Health Digital is looking for hands-on, passionate people who want to join a high energy and growing team to make a difference in customers lives and who want to be on the forefront of digital innovation that aims to reinvent what a pharmacy and a health care company can be in the digital world. Currently, we are seeking a Staff Software Development Engineer, who will serve as a senior technical leader on a cross-functional product team responsible for designing, developing, and delivering scalable healthcare technology solutions. You will play a critical role in driving architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and partnering with product, UX, and business stakeholders to build secure, cloud-native applications that enhance the digital healthcare experience.

 

In this role, you will lead the development of distributed systems and microservices leveraging Java, Spring Boot, event-driven architectures, and modern cloud technologies. This Staff Engineer will also guide data migration and interoperability initiatives, supporting healthcare integrations that enable seamless and secure exchange of clinical data across platforms. The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering expertise with a passion for innovation, technical leadership, and delivering high-quality solutions in an Agile environment.

 

Expectations for the Role

 

Software Engineering & Architecture

·         Architect, design, and develop high-performance microservices using Java, JEE, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud

·         Lead development of event-driven services using Apache Kafka (producers, consumers, streaming patterns, schema evolution)

·         Own API strategy for RESTful services, ensuring consistent JSON modeling, backward-compatible versioning, and strong API governance

·         Mentor team members and contribute to engineering standards, design reviews, and coding best practices

 

Data Migration, ETL, and Data Management

• Design and implement ETL pipelines for structured/unstructured data using tools such as Python-based pipelines, Spring Batch, or cloud-native ETL frameworks
• Lead data migration efforts for legacy-to-cloud or system-to-system transitions (incremental loads, bulk loads, validation, reconciliation)
• Establish data quality, profiling, and governance practices
• Work with clinical data formats, mapping, transformations, and normalization (FHIR resources, HL7 v2 segments, CCD/C-CDA documents)

 

Cloud, DevOps & SecDevOps

• Build and maintain CI/CD automation (unit tests, integration tests, SAST/DAST, artifact provenance, policy gates)
• Deploy and operate services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) using GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud Build, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, IAM, Secret Manager, etc
• Drive SecDevOps practices: threat modeling, secure coding, dependency scanning, secrets management, container hardening
• Implement observability frameworks (OpenTelemetry, tracing, dashboards, alerts, SLOs)

 

Healthcare/EHR Integration

• Integrate microservices with EHR systems using HL7 v2, FHIR, SMART on FHIR, and standard healthcare APIs
• Support workflows across patient data exchange, interoperability, and HIPAA-aligned data flows
• Collaborate with compliance and security teams to implement regulatory safeguards

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICTIONS

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience in enterprise environments
• 7+ years of experience developing applications using Java, J2EE, Spring Boot, and RESTful services
• 5+ years of experience designing and implementing microservices architectures
• 3+ years of experience with Apache Kafka or similar event-streaming technologies
• 3+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices
• 3+ years of experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
• 2+ years of experience working with public cloud platforms, including GCP, AWS, or Azure

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience integrating with healthcare systems using FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR, or EHR platforms such as Epic, Cerner, or MEDITECH
• Experience leading technical initiatives and influencing engineering decisions across teams
• Strong understanding of software design principles, scalable architectures, and distributed systems
• Experience building and operating solutions on Google Cloud Platform (GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud Build, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, IAM)
• Experience with large-scale application modernization, cloud transformation, or data migration programs
• Knowledge of ETL processes, data quality practices, and healthcare data management
• Experience with Spring Batch, Dataflow, or cloud-native data processing frameworks
• Understanding of security best practices including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, secrets management, and vulnerability management
• Experience implementing monitoring and observability solutions using OpenTelemetry, Grafana, or similar platforms
• Knowledge of regulated healthcare environments, including HIPAA and HITRUST requirements
• Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (HS diploma + 4 years relevant experience)

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$106,605.00 - $284,280.00

This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.  The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.  This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.  This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
