The role focuses on sustaining production test operations for Silicon Photonics products at a supplier in Taipei, ensuring stable throughput, yield, and quality. Key duties include driving the automation of manual processes and managing technical interfaces with supplier engineering and customers.
Test Engineer 4
Position Summary: The Manufacturing Engineer, Silicon Photonics owns day-to-day test engineering support for Silicon Photonics products manufactured at our supplier in Taipei. The role is central to ensuring stable production output, resolving yield and throughput issues, meeting customer test-data quality requirements, and driving the transition from manual, tribal-knowledge-based processes to documented, automated, and scalable production. The engineer serves as the primary technical interface to supplier engineering and partners closely with the business unit, customers, and internal teams to sustain and ramp production test for Silicon Photonics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sustain production test operations for SPP Silicon Photonics products (LIP, Burn-In, ECL test flows) at the supplier in Taipei, ensuring stable throughput, yield, and quality; own the day-to-day technical interface with supplier engineering, resolving test issues through root cause analysis and corrective action (30%).
- Monitor and improve production metrics – yield, throughput, retest rate, and cycle time; lead SPC implementation and continuous improvement initiatives; manage hold-lot disposition for production-line quality events and lead customer-return RMA (20%).
- Drive automation and process standardization – convert currently manual, tribal-knowledge processes (pick-and-place packaging, optical alignment, light coupling) into documented, automated, and scalable production; build and maintain test-procedure documentation (X/Y/Z stage calibration, laser-path tuning, recipe management) and release into Semtech AgilePLM (20%).
- Support customer test-data requirements – test data integrity, e-data delivery, and shipment quality; partner with Semtech IT and customer counterparts on automated test-data transmission and API integration to customer systems (15%).
- Support test capacity ramp planning, including qualification of new test equipment (BI, LIP, ECL, gain test); provide regular status updates on open initiatives to the internal management team and key customers (15%).
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of test engineering experience, with at least 2 years in Silicon Photonics, optoelectronic device, or laser diode test.
- Hands-on experience with LIV/LIP test, burn-in, and optical characterization equipment (Optical Spectrum Analyzer, photodetector, Source Measure Unit).
- Strong working knowledge of semiconductor production test fundamentals: yield monitoring, SPC, root cause analysis, and hold-lot disposition.
- Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal, for working with Semtech HQ and global customers.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with OSATs or contract manufacturers in a production sustaining role.
- Familiarity with optical alignment, manual probing, and laser characterization techniques.
- Knowledge of optical transceiver components and architectures (TIA, CDR, GainChip, EML, DML, coherent modules).
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision while multi-tasking across projects.
- Self-starter who operates effectively in a transition or acquisition environment with incomplete documentation.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical mindset with a bias toward action.
- Customer-facing maturity and professionalism in technical communication.
- Comfortable balancing hands-on technical work with cross-functional coordination.
- Team player with mentoring and training capability.
