Software Engineer in Test (SDET) – Backend Automation

Company Description

We are seeking a hands-on backend engineer with strong quality engineering and test automation expertise. The initial focus will be on test engineering and building robust automated testing using TypeScript and Playwright, with opportunities to contribute more broadly to production backend engineering using Java or Kotlin.

This role is best suited to an engineer who is comfortable working in both production code and test automation rather than focusing exclusively on traditional QA activities.

Job Description

• Build, maintain, and improve automated test frameworks using TypeScript and Playwright.
• Develop functional, integration, and API tests for backend services and application workflows.
• Create clear, comprehensive, and maintainable test cases.
• Debug test failures, application issues, and backend behavior to identify root causes.
• Support automated test execution through CI/CD pipelines.
• Contribute independently to production backend code using Java or Kotlin.
• Apply strong software engineering and test engineering practices to improve product quality and reliability.

Qualifications

Must-Have Skills

• Strong professional backend engineering experience.
• Strong test engineering and automation experience.
• Hands-on experience developing backend services using Java or Kotlin.
• Advanced TypeScript skills.
• Hands-on Playwright experience, including creating and maintaining test frameworks.
• Experience writing functional, integration, and API tests.
• Ability to write clear, comprehensive, and maintainable test cases.
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis skills.
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and automated test execution.
• Ability to contribute independently to production code, not only test code.
• Enterprise experience strongly preferred.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience with cloud platforms, containerized services, or microservice architectures.
• Experience with performance, reliability, accessibility, or contract testing.
• Experience working with REST APIs and backend services.
• Experience with Git and pull-request workflows.
• Experience with CI/CD platforms.
• Experience with web and mobile web testing tools.

• Remote contract opportunity for candidates located in APAC.
• Candidates must be able to maintain approximately 80–90% overlap with EST working hours.
