We are hiring a Social Worker (Casual up to 19.5 hrs/week) to join the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in Houston. Position Summary:

The UTHealth School of Public Health (UTSPH) is hiring a temporary social worker/care coordinator to refer families of young children (ages 5-7 years old) with special healthcare needs to medical, financial, and family support programs and services. Families will be contacted remotely (via phone/mail/or e-mail).

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Assess child and family’s needs and provide referral to services, community resources, and family support organizations.
  • Assist families with application or re-application for other appropriate federal, state and community services as needed.
  • Assists families with accessing necessary resources and community services and supports (e.g., Medicaid benefits and waiver programs, Women Infants and Children [WIC], Early Childhood Intervention [ECI], special education services, Supplemental Security Income [SSI] benefits, medical transportation, housing assistance, mental health services, medical and dental care, transitional services for children aging out of pediatric care)
  • Maintains documentation of encounters with families including number of referrals made, and types of referrals made. Attend routine meetings to provide updates on status of referrals.
  • May assist with other projects related to family outreach for children with special needs (e.g., writing or editing reports, reviewing outreach and social work training materials).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) by State of Texas required
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) by State of Texas preferred
  • At least 2 years of experience working in community health, outreach, or with children with special healthcare needs, preferred.
  • Knowledge of health and social service programs for children with special healthcare needs (e.g., Medicaid, CHIP, SSI, ECI), preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), strongly preferred.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or related field required

Minimum Experience:

  • 1 year of social work experience required Medical social work experience preferred

 

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code §117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position. Personnel in such positions, and similarly situated state contractors, will be routinely reviewed to determine whether things such as criminal history or continuous connections to the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the applicant, employee, or contractor from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure. A foreign adversary is a nation listed in 15 C.F.R. §791.4.
