Description:

Social entrepreneurs are change agents who use social enterprise and social innovation to address complex social problems. This course introduces students to social entrepreneurship across nonprofit, social enterprise, hybrid, and for-profit models. Students will examine the social entrepreneurship ecosystem, opportunity identification, community co-creation, business planning, market and industry analysis, design thinking, funding models, revenue streams, capital structures, legal structures, and the development of social ventures. Students will apply these concepts toward the development of a health business feasibility plan for a new social venture, nonprofit, or commercial enterprise.

 

The University of Toronto instructor will be co-facilitating the course with their KNUST counterpart. Partnering University: Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana.

 

Estimated course enrollment:  ~ 30 students

Class schedule: Online synchronous seminar-style sessions; occurring between Monday, July 20, 2026 - Friday, July 31, 2026. Classes will be 9am to 12 pm.

 

Sessional dates of appointment:  July 1 - July 31, 2026

 

Salary (0.25 FCE):  

Sessional Lecturer I - $4,910.35
Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term - $5,255.02
Sessional Lecturer II - $5,255.02
Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term - $5,380.14
Sessional Lecturer III - $5,380.14
Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term - $5,515.18

Minimum qualifications:  Master’s Degree in Health Sciences, Business, Entrepreneurship, Social Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Global Health, Public Health, or a related field.

 

Preferred qualifications:  Previous experience in teaching, social entrepreneurship, social innovation, venture development, project management, health or global health innovation, business model development, social enterprise funding or revenue models, international or cross-institutional education, mentorship, and student evaluation. 

 

Description of duties:  The instructor will be responsible for achieving the course objectives: broadening students’ understanding of social entrepreneurship; distinguishing social entrepreneurship across nonprofit, social enterprise, hybrid, and for-profit models; supporting students in identifying social problems and translating them into social value opportunities; introducing students to social venture funding models; and guiding students in the development of a health business feasibility plan.

 

The instructor will design and deliver course materials and online seminar-style sessions, coordinate with the KNUST counterpart and relevant UofT collaborators, contribute to course assessments, evaluate student work, provide feedback on student venture concepts, and participate in course planning and follow-up as needed.
